Rock blanks Edinboro, 2-0, on Senior Day

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team defeated Edinboro, 2-0, in its Senior Day match Saturday at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team defeated Edinboro, 2-0, in its Senior Day match Saturday at James Egli Field.
 
The win improves The Rock's record to 6-3-8 on the season overall and 5-3-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division while Edinboro moves to 2-8-6 overall and 1-7-6 in the division following the loss.
 
SRU's won its home finale as Maddie DeLucio and Faith Diffenbacher each netted their second goals of the season while Brooke Riefenstahl and Libby Zacharyasz both dished out assists.
 
Ashley Rea and Morgan Sarver both aided in The Rock's potent attack with a game-high six shots, each landing one on target. 
 
Emma Yoder earned the 28th shutout of her career after making five saves over 90 minutes of action.
 
Slippery Rock was able to score in each half of play, while holding of the Fighting Scots offense to only eight shots, en route to securing its 58th shutout under head coach Jessica Giegucz, and the team's ninth of the 2022 season.
 
In the 29th minute, SRU was awarded a corner kick that Rea sent into the goal box, finding the outstretched foot of Riefenstahl which found the head of DeLucio, who in turn sent home the game's first goal.  
 
Coming out of the break, another corner by Slippery Rock allowed Zacharyasz to thread a pass between Fighting Scot defenders to the foot of Diffenbacher, who laid a shot past Edinboro goalie Kaylee Lauriel to extend The Rock's lead to 2-0 at 62:00.
 
Following the goal, the Slippery Rock backline held the Fighting Scots to just three additional shots, all of which were stopped, on the way to the 2-0 Rock victory.
 
For the game, Slippery Rock held advantages over Edinboro in total shots (24-8), shots on goal (10-5) and corners (15-3).
 
Prior to the game The Rock's 2022 senior class of Sierra Lawler, Julia Mascaro, Alaina Mihalik, Ashley Rea, Brooke Riefenstahl, Kayla Swope and Emma Yoder were recognized for their contributions to the program over their careers.
 
SRU ends the regular season on the road with a PSAC West match against Clarion 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at Memorial Stadium. Slippery Rock defeated the Golden Eagles 4-0 earlier this year.
