ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team suffered a 74-62 loss on the road at No. 14 Gannon University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest Monday.
Â
With the loss The Rock's record moves to 10-7 overall this season and 5-6 in the conference while nationally ranked Gannon improves to 15-3 on the season and 10-3 in the PSAC West.
Â
SRU was led by
Deleah Gibson who tallied 17 points featuring four made 3-pointers, ending the contest 6-of-12 from the floor, as well as making two assists and two steals.
Â
Jamiyah Johnson was the remaining Rock player to score double-digits with a double-double performance of 17 points and 19 rebounds to go along with two blocks and one steal. Johnson's 19 rebounds rank seventh in the SRU single-game record book.
Â
Rounding out The Rock's top contributors Monday were
Anyah Curd and
Daeja Quick. Curd provided SRU with eight points and two rebounds while Quick passed out six assists, had two steals, blocked one shot and scored four points over 40 minutes.
Â
Slippery Rock played great to start the game, jumping out to an early 19-9 lead before Johnson picked up two quick fouls within 10 seconds of one another forcing her to the bench with 2:19 left in the first quarter. Serving as a pivotal moment, Gannon took advantage of her absence by going on a 16-5 run and taking a one-point lead, 25-24, with 6:35 to play in the half.
Â
The Rock and Golden Knights traded baskets for the remainder of the second quarter with Gannon pulling out to a 38-35 lead heading into the halftime break.
Â
Curd brought SRU even with Gannon to open the third quarter with a 3-pointer on The Rock's first possession of the half, but any thoughts of a Rock comeback were then slashed as GU proceeded to go on a decisive 10-0 run that opened up a lead Slippery Rock could never overcome as Gannon staved off the upset bid, which saw SRU cut its deficit down to as little as three points late in the third quarter en route to a 74-62 Golden Knight victory.
Â
As a team, The Rock shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) overall, 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from 3-point range and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe. SRU's 10 made 3-pointers were a season-high. In addition to outrebounding the Golden Knights (33-29), Slippery Rock also held an advantage in second chance points (12-10).
Â
Gannon ended the contest shooting 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the floor, 35 percent (7-of-20) from long range and 95.5 percent (21-of-22) from the foul line. The Golden Knights bested SRU in points in the paint (32-22) and fast break points (9-8). Gannon scored 19 points off turnovers as it forced The Rock into 17 turnovers while making just nine miscues of its own.
Â
Slippery Rock continues its conference road swing when it travels to Clarion University 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. SRU defeated the Golden Eagles, 65-62, at home earlier in the season.
