INDIANA, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to Indiana University (Pa.), 2-1, Wednesday night on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition.
Â
The loss drops The Rock's record to 3-5 on the season overall and 0-2 in PSAC contests while the Crimson Hawks improve to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in league games.
Â
Leading Slippery Rock's efforts against Indiana was the duo of
Jessie Trube and
Leslie Colliver. Trube accounted for SRU's lone goal, her sixth of the year, in addition to registering three shots while Colliver assisted on the score all the while making a defensive save.
Â
Jordyn Isner was responsible for SRU's other shot on goal. Goalkeeper
Grace Burker played all 60 minutes, making two saves.
Â
The Rock and Crimson Hawks seemed poised to finish the first quarter in a scoreless tie, but with just 39 seconds remaining in the opening period Shelby Harnish deflected in Blaise Cugini's shot attempt to give IUP a 1-0 lead through 15 minutes of action.
Â
Slippery Rock responded midway through the second quarter when Colliver fired a shot from eight yards out that was deflected by a Crimson Hawk defender. However, Trube tracked down the ricochet and placed a shot past an outstretched Amanda Zaner, IUP's goalie, to pull The Rock even with Indiana at 1-1 in the 23rd minute.
Â
The game remained tied going into halftime, but five minutes into the third quarter Indiana posted what turned out to be the game-winning goal courtesy of a Georgiana Chiavacci shot at 35:15.
Â
SRU's two best chances to tie the game occurred late in the third quarter and in the waning moments of the fourth quarter.
Â
On the third quarter attempt,
Lauren Marks made a pass from midfield to Trube, who sprinted 45 yards to corral the ball, but just as Trube was about to attempt a shot an IUP defender successfully deflected the attempt, giving Zaner time to clear the ball and end the threat.
Â
In the fourth quarter,
Katelyn Sparks played a ball from 40 yards out to a streaking Marks, but Zaner narrowly beat Marks to the ball as the IUP goalkeeper came 10 yards out from the cage, barely kicking the ball away before Marks could get a shot attempt off to potentially tie the game.
Â
SRU and IUP went on to trade possession for the rest of the contest as the Crimson Hawks hung on for the one-goal win.
Â
For the game, IUP held advantages over The Rock in total shots (7-4), shots on goal (5-4) and penalty corners (11-7).
Â
Trube's goal moved her into a tie with Jane Machuga (1975-78) and Dina Pezzimenti (1989-92) for ninth place on The Rock's career points list at 40 (19 goals / two assists).
