SLIPPERY ROCK Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team lost to Lock Haven University, 3-1, Wednesday evening on a rain-soaked James Egli Field.
Wednesday's game included a 90-minute severe weather delay and was stopped with nine minutes remaining in regulation due to darkness.
With the non-conference loss, The Rock falls to 2-2-2 on overall while Lock Haven improves to 3-1-1 on the season.
Slippery Rock's offense was led by
Ramses Minaya who netted what would be SRU's only goal of the contest on an assist by
Anthony Gagliardi II in the 39th minute.
Also taking part in SRU's offensive charge was
Alex Plimmer who took two shots on goal accompanied by
Luke Gildea and
Benjiman Trevino with one shot on target apiece.
Goalkeepers
Hossam Aly and
Derek Hoffman split time for The Rock. In 58 minutes, Aly made two saves while allowing a goal. In 24 minutes, Hoffman made a pair of saves while allowing two goals. The Lock Haven contest was Hoffman's first action of the season.
Slippery Rock struck first with Minaya's goal, marking just the second time this season SRU has scored in the first half. The Rock then entered into a defensive battle with the Bald Eagles as neither team surrendered another goal for the remainder of the half.
Coming out of the break, LHU midfielder Andrea DiSomma landed a shot past Aly off of a corner kick ball sent into the box by David Dries to even the score at 1-1 less than five minutes into the second half.
The final shot before a severe storm entered the area, an attempt from Samuel Hershey, was chipped over the head of Aly, but saved by Dan Shearer who recovered quickly on defense to prevent the go-ahead goal. In the 58th minute of play, lightning prevailed as the game entered the 90-minute delay.
When play resumed, the Bald Eagles offense picked up quickly with goals by Dean Lewis in the 67th minute and Hershey in the 77th minute to give LHU a 3-1 edge. Slippery Rock could never quite come up with a response to the late goals as the game was halted in the 81st minute, giving Lock Haven the two-goal victory.
Lock Haven held the advantage over The Rock in shots (13-6), shots on goal (8-5) and corners (10-3).
Slippery Rock returns to play on the road when it travels to West Virginia to face Shepherd University 1 p.m. Saturday.
