The Slippery Rock volleyball team concluded its time at the Atlantic Region crossover on Saturday with a three-set loss to host Wheeling and a narrow five-set setback against Fairmont State.

WHEELING, W. Va. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team concluded its time at the Atlantic Region crossover on Saturday with a three-set loss to host Wheeling University and a narrow five-set setback against Fairmont State University.

Slippery Rock (3-9) opened the day in a 25-15, 25-15, 25-17 loss to perennial Atlantic Region power Wheeling (7-4) followed by a tight 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 13-25, 15-7 defeat by Fairmont State (7-3).

Erica Selfridge shouldered the offensive load for The Rock over the two matches Saturday with 21 total kills and an ace. Chelsie Wheeler, who posted a strong .283 attack percentage on the day, chipped in 16 kills while Alayna Chizmar had 10 kills followed by Lauren Crytzer and Mary Berger with nine kills apiece to round out the SRU attack.

Logan Whitaker guided the offense with 65 assists in the two contests.

Defensively, Crytzer tallied thee blocks with Berger being the only other Rock athlete with multiple blocks at two rejections. Kate Lachendro, who also served two aces, finished the matches with 41 total digs.

Following its three-set loss to Wheeling, Slippery Rock came out strong against Fairmont State with a 25-23 victory in the opening set. The Falcons rallied back with consecutive victories over the second and third sets.

SRU persevered and posted a convincing 25-13 win in the fourth to send the contest into a fifth set, The Rock's fourth such match of the year. However, Slippery Rock couldn't quite finish off the comeback as FSU earned a 15-7 match-deciding win in the final set.

Selfridge netted 17 kills against Fairmont State for her fifth double-digit kill effort of the year.

Following 12 away matches to begin the season, Slippery Rock will hold its home-opener 7 p.m. Sept. 21 against Pitt-Johnstown at Morrow Field House.
