Rock downs Frostburg State, 4-1

Led by two goals from Katelyn Sparks, the Slippery Rock field hockey team picked up a 4-1 victory on the road at Frostburg State Wednesday.

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team picked up a 4-1 non-conference victory on the road at Frostburg State University Wednesday.

With the win, Slippery Rock improves its record to 2-2 on the season while Frostburg State drops to 0-5 in 2021.

The Rock was led on the day by Katelyn Sparks, who scored two goals en route to SRU's three-goal victory. Adding to SRU's offensive surge with goals was the duo of Jessie Trube and Leslie Colliver. The goals were the first career scores for both Sparks and Colliver while Trube now has a team-high three goals in 2021.

Wednesday's game was never in doubt as Slippery Rock posted two goals in the first quarter followed by a pair of second-quarter goals on the way to its decisive victory.

Colliver opened the scoring onslaught in the sixth minute followed shortly after by Sparks' first goal at 10:12 to close out the opening quarter with a 2-0 lead.

Goals by Trube (19:33) and Sparks (27:56) pushed The Rock's lead over the Bobcats to four goals in the second quarter before FSU was able to break the shutout courtesy of an Ava Schmidt score with 14 seconds left in the first half.

SRU went on to post five shots in the third quarter, four of which came from Kayla Del Vecchio, and one more in the fourth, but couldn't quite find its fifth goal of the contest. Defensively, The Rock held Frostburg State to just one shot in the second half, an attempt by Schmidt that was stopped by SRU's back line, as Slippery Rock closed out the win.

Slippery Rock finished the game with commanding advantages in total shots (18-3), shots on goal (11-1) and penalty corners (9-2).

Trube and Sparks concluded the contest with three shots on goal apiece while Erin Roland placed two attempts on target with the trio of Colliver, Jordyn Isner and Samantha Karmonick all tallying one shot on goal as well.

Goalkeeper Grace Burker picked up her second win of the season after playing the opening three quarters before giving way to Hannah Nurse for the final 15 minutes.

Slippery Rock next plays two non-conference games in as many days starting with a road game at Seton Hill University 12 p.m. Saturday and a home game vs. Indiana University (Pa.) 2 p.m. Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium on International Students Day.
