Rock wraps up time at Hall of Fame City Challenge

The Slippery Rock volleyball team concluded its time at the Hall of Fame City Challenge Saturday with losses to Fairmont State and Saginaw Valley State.

CANTON, Ohio - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team concluded its time at the Hall of Fame City Challenge Saturday with losses to Fairmont State and Saginaw Valley State.

SRU (2-6) opened the day with a three-set loss to Fairmont State (25-22, 25-20, 25-19) followed in the nightcap by a four-set setback against Saginaw Valley State (25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 25-11).

Pacing The Rock on Saturday was the quartet of Erica Selfridge, Chelsie Wheeler, Alayna Chizmar and Kate Lachendro.

Selfridge compiled 25 kills and 23 digs over the two matches while Wheeler contributed 20 kills with Chizmar turning in 16 kills on the day. Lachendro made 44 digs as SRU's libero.

MATCH 1: FSU 3 – SRU 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-19)
Slippery Rock held multi-point leads in all three sets against Fairmont State, but late Falcon rallies in each game proved to be The Rock's undoing in a 3-0 loss.

Wheeler was stellar for The Rock against FSU as the freshman posted 11 kills on a .409 attack percentage. Chizmar nearly joined Wheeler with double-digit kills as she registered nine. Selfridge rounded out SRU's offensive leaders with six kills of her own.

Logan Whitaker paced the offense with 26 assists in addition to eight digs, three kills, two blocks and an ace. Defensively, Lachendro, who served three aces, made 27 digs while Stephanie O'Donnell made three blocks.

SRU led Fairmont midway through the opening set, 15-10, but FSU rallied with an 11-3 run to push the Falcons ahead 21-18. Slippery Rock cut FSU's lead to one point two times over the remainder of the set, but could never quite re-gain the lead in the 25-22 loss.

The Rock once again led midway through the second set, at 14-9, but FSU again pulled away with a commanding 16-6 run to claim the five-point victory. Fairmont State closed out the sweep by scoring the final nine points of the third set in a 25-16 win.

MATCH 2: SVSU 3 – SRU 1 ((25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 25-11)
The Rock and Cardinals split the opening two sets, but SVSU was able to pull out the four-set victory with consecutive wins in the third and fourth sets.

Selfridge registered a match-high 19 kills in addition to 15 digs in a double-double effort. Wheeler and Chizmar followed Selfridge with nine and seven kills, respectively, while Whitaker handed out 33 assists. Lachendro made a team-high 17 digs.

Following a 25-17 opening-set loss, Slippery Rock evened the match at a set apiece via a narrow 25-23 win in the second. However, SRU was unable to overcome a 12-6 deficit in the third set as SVSU pulled out a 25-16 win followed in the fourth when the Cardinals ran out to a 12-2 lead en route to the 25-11 match-clinching win.

Slippery Rock will play four matches against West Liberty, Notre Dame, Wheeling and Fairmont State at Sept. 17-18 at the Atlantic Region Crossover.
