Rondeau lifts Rock by IUP 11-10 with late goal

Charleigh Rondeau scored the game-winning goal with 13.7 seconds left to lift Slippery Rock to an 11-10 comeback win over IUP Tuesday evening.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Charleigh Rondeau took a pass from Jamie DiCarlo in transition and fired home the game-winning goal with 13.7 seconds left to lift the Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 win over Indiana University (Pa.) Tuesday evening in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The winning goal capped a 3-0 run by Slippery Rock over the final 13:11 of the game as The Rock rallied back to earn the victory. Indiana used a 4-0 run over a 10-minute stretch in the second half to take a 10-8 lead with 15:39 to play, but The Rock slammed the door and shut out the IUP attack for the final 15:38 to pave the way for the comeback.

Rondeau's tally was the only goal scored by either team in the final seven minutes of what proved to be a back-and-forth thriller from the start. Neither team ever led by more than three goals with The Rock's 6-3 lead late in the first half standing as the largest of a game that featured five ties and four lead changes.

Slippery Rock picks up its third win in the last four games to level its overall record at 4-4 while improving to 3-4 in PSAC West action. IUP drops to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in western division games.

The Rock were outshot for just the third time this season with IUP posting a 35-28 advantage in total shots, but freshman goalie Gillian O'Rourke put together the best performance of her young career to keep SRU in the game. O'Rourke finished with a career-high 18 saves to mark her third straight outing with at least 14 saves. She made five saves in the final 15 minutes to give SRU a chance to complete the comeback on the other end.

IUP also finished with advantages of 27-21 in ground balls and 79 percent (11-of-14) to 48 percent (12-of-25) on clear attempts. Slippery Rock won the battle in the draw circle with a 14-9 edge in draw controls.

Molly Buettner led The Rock attack with three goals and one assist. She also grabbed three ground balls and set up the transition play for the game-winning goal, finding DiCarlo with an initial pass to set the play in motion.

DiCarlo added two goals and two assists, while Rondeau, Katie Dlugosz and Emily Benham each scored two goals and Emily Mox handed out one assist to cap the scorers. Rondeau also finished with a game-high 13 draw controls.

IUP got four goals from Kayte Zeiler and three goals and two assists from Jordan Kulp. Lauren Piecknick made 11 saves in goal.

The two teams have split the season series so far, but will get a chance to settle the rubber-match as both programs agreed to add a third game this spring after Edinboro opted out of the season, canceling games for both teams. IUP will travel back to Slippery Rock for a 5 p.m. match Saturday, April 24 that will serve as the SRU Senior Day. The game will count for both teams' overall records, but will not count towards the PSAC standings.

In the meantime, Slippery Rock will shift its focus to a pair of upcoming games against ranked opponents. The Rock will travel to No. 25 Mercyhurst Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. start before welcoming No. 23 Seton Hill next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game.
