WEXFORD, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team defeated West Virginia State University, 5-2, Friday night at the PA Tennis Academy in Wexford, Pennsylvania.
Â
Friday's match featured two of the top teams in the Atlantic Region. The victory will likely prove significant for The Rock's postseason hopes later in the season.
Â
With the win, Slippery Rock improves its record to 3-4 on the season overall and 3-2 against Division II opponents. West Virginia State drops to 3-5 in 2021 with the loss. Much like SRU, WVSU's record is misleading as only two of its losses this season have come against Division II competition.
Â
SRU earned its victory by taking the doubles point followed by a great all-around showing in the singles portion of the match as The Rock took four of the six bouts en route to the team victory.
Â
Slippery Rock and the Yellow Jackets split the opening two doubles contests of the night as
Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and
Lois Page beat Maya Haidari and Abigail Wild, 6-2, before WVSU rallied back with a victory in the second flight where Gaya Solomon and Chante Malo picked up a 6-3 win over
Lacey Cohen and
Olivia Warner.
Â
Amy Varckette and
Gabi del Val del Toro clinched the doubles point for The Rock when the third-flight duo narrowly edged Emily Moore and Hanna Kruhlova, 7-6, giving SRU the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. Making the win all the more impressive was the fact that Friday marked the first time this season that Varckette and del Val del Toro competed as a team.
Â
Abigail Wild pulled the Yellow Jackets even with The Rock when she opened singles action by defeating Page in the first flight 6-4, 6-1.
Â
Slippery Rock and West Virginia State would go on to split the next two matches as Cohen downed Malo 6-2, 6-0 in the third flight before Moore picked up a 6-3, 7-5 sixth-flight win against Varckette to keep the match tied at 2-2.
Â
However, any thoughts of Yellow Jackets comeback ended there as Slippery Rock finished out the night by taking the final three matches to seal the team victory.
Â
First, Gonzalez Sanchez bettered Solomon 6-3, 6-4 from the second flight for what was her fifth consecutive singles victory.
del Val del Toro followed Gonzalez Sanchez's win by recording the match-deciding point in the fourth flight with a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory against Kruhlova. del Val del Toro has now won three straight singles matches.
Â
Warner closed the night on a high-note for The Rock thanks to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in the fifth flight against Haidari.
Â
Slippery Rock will look to stretch its winning streak to three matches when it returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition with a road match 1 p.m. Saturday at Edinboro University.
