Rock falls 14-10 to LHU on Senior Day

Slippery Rock dropped a 14-10 decision to Lock Haven on Senior Day Tuesday to close out the 2021 season.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team closed its 2021 season with a 14-10 loss at home on Senior Day against Lock Haven University Tuesday evening from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
Lock Haven used a 5-2 run over the final 14 minutes of the second half to pull away for the win after the teams played a closely contested and entertaining opening 46 minutes of action.
 
The Bald Eagles jumped out to a 5-1 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half, but Slippery Rock answered with a 5-0 run that took less than four minutes of game clock and put The Rock out front 6-5 with 7:07 to play in the period.

LHU tallied the next two goals before Emily Benham scored with 2:02 to play to send it to halftime tied at 7-7.
 
Lock Haven took the lead for good just 22 seconds into the second half and would never trail in the final 29:38. The Rock kept the advantage at one goal until just over 13 minutes to play when the Bald Eagles reeled off a 3-0 run that made it 12-8 with 9:09 to play. Jamie DiCarlo stopped that run with 8:25 to go to make it 12-9, but LHU responded with the next two goals to put the game away.
 
The Rock finish the season with a 5-7 overall record and a 4-7 mark in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division games. Lock Haven improves to 4-6 overall and 4-5 in PSAC games and kept its PSAC playoff hopes alive.
 
Slippery Rock finished the game Tuesday with advantages in nearly every statistical category, including 35-30 in shots, 15-11 in draw controls and 23-15 in ground balls, but couldn't solve Lock Haven keeper Lauren Girardi, who made 18 saves to lift her team to the win.
 
The Rock attack was paced by Benham with three goals and one assist. She finishes the year as the leading scorer on the team with 28 goals and 15 assists. Her 15 helpers rank tied for 10th on the SRU single-season ledger.

DiCarlo added a hat trick and Katie Dlugosz scored two goals to cap the multiple point scorers. Rachel Mahoney and Sam Barnhart each tallied one goal to round out the scorers.
 
Rachel Shaw led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and four ground balls, bringing her career totals to 96 caused turnovers and 146 ground balls. She finishes her career ranked second all-time in caused turnovers and fifth all-time in ground balls at The Rock.
 
Charleigh Rondeau grabbed eight draw controls Tuesday to finish the season with 81, the third most in a single-season in SRU history.
 
Gillian O'Rourke made 11 saves in goal for The Rock to finish her freshman season with a 12.27 goals against average and a .454 save percentage.
 
Lock Haven got six points from Campbell Brant with three goals and three assists and Braxtin Reddinger added four goals.
 
Slippery Rock celebrated its five seniors before the game Tuesday, all of whom played four years at The Rock. Shaw was joined in that ceremony by Hayley Pimentel, Katie Hart, Corryne Sulpizio and Francesca Lindelow.
