CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned a 7-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory Tuesday on the road at California University (Pa.).
Slippery Rock, which has now won four straight matches, closes its 2021 regular season schedule with an 8-5 overall record and a 5-1 mark in PSAC West matches. The Vulcans end their year at 2-7 overall and 1-5 in league matches.
The victory also ensures the SRU women's tennis program of achieving its 12th winning season in the last 16 years.
Tuesday's match was never in question as SRU took the doubles point followed by six straight singles wins en route to its third shutout victory of the season.
SRU opened the match by claiming the doubles point via a pair of 6-0 wins from the first and second flights as
Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and
Gabi del Val del Toro defeated Charlie Gallagher and Fallon Winseck while
Amy Varckette and
Olivia Warner bested Kylie Feltenberger and Carmen Duran.
Prior to Tuesday, neither Gonzalez Sanchez and del Val del Toro or Varckette and Warner had partnered together.
With the doubles point already decided, SRU closed out the opening stage of the match with a 6-4 victory from the third flight where
Lauren Fadden and
Lindsey Fadden defeated Julia McDaniel and Laura Vargas.
Following SRU's doubles success, the back portion of The Rock's singles lineup got off to a quick start when Varckette picked up a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Feltenberger in the fifth flight followed by a 6-1, 6-0 win in the sixth slot by
Lindsey Fadden against Fulvia Camargo. Varckette has now won four straight singles matches.
del Val del Toro clinched the match-deciding point for The Rock by way of a 6
-1, 6-1 win in the second flight over Winseck. Additionally, the victory also marked del Val del Toro's ninth consecutive win.
Gonzalez Sanchez then pushed her winning streak to an impressive 11 matches when she beat Vargas 6-1, 6-0 in the first flight. Gonzalez Sanchez and del Val del Toro close the regular season with matching 11-2 records.
SRU ended a successful day with consecutive wins from the third and fourth flights as Warner registered a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Gallagher and
Lauren Fadden posted a solid 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Duran. The win marked Fadden's fifth in as many matches.
Slippery Rock hosts Mercyhurst University Saturday at the SRU Tennis Courts in the first round of the PSAC Tournament. A start time will be announced in the coming days.
