INDIANA, Pa. -  The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team's quest for a league championship came to an end Wednesday as Indiana University (Pa.) edged SRU, 4-1, in the semifinals of the 2021 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament at the Maple Street Courts in Indiana, Pennsylvania.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 8-6 overall. The Crimson Hawks improve to 13-3 on the year and will now meet Millersville University Saturday in the PSAC Tournament championship match.

Despite Wednesday's loss, Slippery Rock's season is likely not over as SRU stands a great chance of earning one of three at-large berths available to the Atlantic Region for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The Rock was ranked third in the Atlantic Region behind Charleston and IUP in the most recent set of regional rankings released Wednesday by the NCAA.

The conference tournament champions from the PSAC and Mountain East Conference as well as three at-large bids qualify for the NCAA Tournament from the Atlantic Region.

SRU started the match off on a high note by earning the doubles point, but IUP rallied back and took four straight singles matches to earn the 4-1 comeback victory.

Amy Varckette and Lauren Fadden defeated Laura Dunarova and Abby Jones, 6-4, from the third doubles flight in what was the first completed bout of the match. Varckette and Fadden have now won three straight matches and are 7-4 as a team this season.

Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and Lois Page, the 23rd-ranked doubles team in Division II, proceeded to clinch the doubles point for The Rock via a 7-5 win over Idoia Huerta and Lydia Vlachou in the top doubles flight. Much like their teammates in the third flight, Page and Gonzalez Sanchez have also won three straight matches to push their record to 9-3 on the year.

However, Slippery Rock was unable to carry over its doubles momentum into the singles portion of the match as the Crimson Hawks picked up consecutive wins from the fourth, sixth, fifth and second flights en route to the victory.

Vlachou accounted for IUP's first point of the day via a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Olivia Warner in the fourth flight. Jones then scored the go-ahead point for IUP from the sixth flight as she bested Varckette 6-2, 6-2.

The match concluded when Dunarova earned a 6-1, 7-6 (2) win against Fadden in the fifth flight followed by Huerta defeating Sanchez in a tight 6-4, 6-3 decision to secure IUP's fourth point and give the Crimson Hawks the team victory.

Slippery Rock will officially learn its post season fate when the complete NCAA Tournament field is unveiled 8:30 p.m. May 4 on NCAA.com. Dating back to 2006, Slippery Rock has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 11 of a possible 13 seasons.
