SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team pushed its winning streak to three matches with a 5-2 non-conference victory over Bluefield State College Sunday at the SRU Tennis Courts.

Slippery Rock, which has won six out of its last seven matches overall, increased its overall record on the season to 7-5 with the win while Bluefield State dropped to 7-9 after the defeat.

Additionally, the victory also capped off a perfect 3-0 week for The Rock, which also registered victories against Clarion University and Seton Hill University en route to clinching a first round home match against Mercyhurst University in next week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament.

Slippery Rock earned Saturday's win over Bluefield State courtesy of a pair of shutout doubles wins followed by four solid singles victories.

Playing together for the first time this season, Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and Lacey Cohen started the contest with a 6-0 shutout in the first flight over Virginia Zinotti and Ghita Courdi. Amy Varckette and Lauren Fadden proceeded to clinch the doubles point for SRU via a 6-0 win of their own in the third flight against Laura Arias and Paula Saez.

While it ultimately had no bearing on the overall result of the match, Juliana Jimenez and Shreya Chakrabarly did edge Olivia Warner and Gabi del Val del Toro in the second flight, 6-4, at the conclusion of the doubles portion of the event.

Varckette opened up singles play by beating Victoria Cabral in the sixth flight 6-2, 6-4 to give SRU a 2-0 advantage. Bluefield State was then able to briefly cut into The Rock's lead as Chakrabarly bested Cohen in the second flight 6-4, 6-0.

However, any thoughts of a comeback were quickly squashed as Fadden and Gonzalez Sanchez promptly posted respective wins from the fifth and first flights to seal Slippery Rock's team win. Fadden was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Arias while Gonzalez Sanchez increased her winning streak to 10 matches via a 6-3, 6-1 triumph against Courdi.

With the match already decided, the day ended with Zinotti defeating Warner in a tight 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 decision in the fourth flight and del Val del Toro earning a hard fought 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) win against Jimenez in the third slot. del Val del Toro's victory marked her eighth consecutive singles win.

Slippery Rock will close out the PSAC portion of its 2021 schedule 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road at California (Pa.).
