Rock plays to split against Edinboro

The Slippery Rock softball team erased a two-run, seventh-inning deficit in game one highlighted by a Maggie Moore go-ahead, two-RBI single to secure a split of Saturday’s PSAC West doubleheader against Edinboro.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team erased a two-run, seventh-inning deficit in game one highlighted by a Maggie Moore go-ahead, two-RBI single to secure a split of Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader against Edinboro University.

The Fighting Scots (7-9, 7-9 PSAC West) rallied from its defeat in the opener to beat The Rock (5-17, 5-17 PSAC West) in game two, 3-2.

Moore led the Slippery Rock offense over the two games, going 2-for-5 with three RBI in addition to Erin Gardner and Leah Vith recording multi-hit efforts. Chloe Sharman (2-2, 2.73 ERA) and Kelsi Anderson (1-7, 2.66 ERA) turned in a pair of solid relief outings over the two games to anchor SRU's efforts in the circle.

Game One: Slippery Rock 6, Edinboro 4
Slippery Rock trailed Edinboro by two runs heading into the seventh, but scored four unanswered runs highlighted by a Lexie Zavarelle pinch-hit triple and an Anna Villies RBI-single in addition to a two-run single by Moore en route to a 6-4 game one victory.

Moore led The Rock offense going 2-for-4 with three RBI in addition to Gardner adding two hits and two runs scored. Villies recorded a hit and a run scored while Zavarelle tallied the forementioned triple.

Anderson was effective over 3.2 innings, yielding three unearned runs on three hits before giving way to Sharman who pitched the final 3.1 innings. She allowed just one unearned run on two hits while striking out four.

Maura Pasquale led the Edinboro lineup with its lone multi-hit effort going 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI. Starting pitcher Macy Sral (4-3, 3.88 ERA) took a no decision after allowing two runs on three hits in addition to striking out two in 4.2 innings pitched.

Slippery Rock jumped out to a two-run lead in the fourth on an RBI-single from Moore followed by Cami Fisk scoring on an Edinboro fielding error.

Edinboro quickly took their first lead of the day in the home half of the fourth when Pasquale brought home three runs on a double into the left center field gap before adding another run on her second RBI-double of the day in the sixth.

Trailing by two entering the top of the seventh, Zavarelle began the rally for Slippery Rock with a leadoff pinch-hit triple before coming home to score on an Alexa Guglielmino RBI-groundout. The comeback effort continued for SRU as Mackenzie Freeman and Gardner reached base via a hit by pitch and a fielding error, respectively.

With runners on first and second and just one out, Villies delivered a game-tying RBI-single down the left field line. Following a Fisk walk to load the bases, Moore lined a two-RBI single to center field putting Slippery Rock up 6-4. Sharman fended off a brief Fighting Scot rally in the bottom of the frame to secure the game-one win.

Game Two: Edinboro 3, Slippery Rock 2
Claire Zimmerman (2-8, 4.83 ERA) and Anderson combined to allow just three runs on seven hits in game two, but The Rock offense was stymied by Lauren Busch who recorded her second-straight complete-game effort in a 3-2 game two win for Edinboro.

Vith went 2-for-3 with an RBI-double to lead the Slippery Rock lineup. Regan Hozak added an RBI-single while Freeman and Guglielmino each recorded a single.

Zimmerman took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits over three innings before being relieved by Anderson who allowed just two hits and struck out two over the final three frames.

Pasquale continued her hot hitting from game one in the night cap, going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run along with Cheyenne Shughart and Mackenzie Quider adding one double apiece. Busch picked up the win after allowing two runs on five hits and six strikeouts.

The Fighting Scots opened the scoring in the second when Kearson Wagner singled home Shughart, but Slippery Rock struck back with a run of its own in the third when Vith brought home Guglielmino on an RBI-single down the right field line.

Edinboro jumped back in front in the home half of the third when Pasquale drove a home run over the left field wall, giving EU a two-run lead. A fourth-inning RBI-single by Hozak brought the Edinboro advantage to just a run, but Bush went on to retire 10 of the next 11 Rock batters to clinch the 3-2 victory.
