ERIE, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team returned to its winning ways with an impressive 4-3 victory on the road against Mercyhurst University Tuesday at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Â
The victory snapped The Rock's two-matching losing streak and improved SRU's record to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition. Mercyhurst drops to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in league contests with the loss.
Â
Tuesday's match was a back-and-forth affair that saw Slippery Rock take the doubles points before earning three singles victories from the top of its lineup en route to the victory.
Â
Mercyhurst seemed poised to earn the doubles tally early as Valentine Budin and Janice Theodora opened the match with a 6-2 victory in the third flight over
Lauren Fadden and
Amy Varckette.
Â
However, Slippery Rock responded with back-to-back wins in the first and second flights to earn the point and take a 1-0 advantage heading into the singles portion of the match.
Â
Lois Page and
Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez were responsible for the victory at No. 1 doubles via a solid 6-1 triumph over Ivona Plecevic and Athina Tsagkaraki followed by a 6-4 win by
Olivia Warner and
Gabi del Val del Toro against Emily Gordon and Naomi Jahr in the second flight.
Â
The win by Warner and del Val del Toro marked Warner's 36th career victory in the second flight, tying her with Ashley Greene (2003-07) for the third highest total from that position in program history.
Â
Gonzalez Sanchez continued her hot streak to begin singles play by besting Plecevic 6-1, 6-2 from the second flight. Gonzalez Sanchez has now won four straight singles matches to push her record to 4-2 in 2021.
Â
Mercyhurst battled back to tie the match at 2-2 by claiming victories in the sixth and fourth flights, respectively, as Theodora got the best of Varckette 6-3, 6-1 and Budin defeated Warner 7-6, 6-1.
Â
However, the tie was short-lived as Slippery Rock clinched the match by way of consecutive victories from the third and first flights.
Â
del Val del Toro gave Slippery Rock its third point of the day courtesy of a 7-6, 6-1 victory against Tsagkaraki in what was her fourth win on the young season.
Â
Page proceeded to seal the victory Slippery Rock by beating Jahr with a tight 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 decision in a contest that featured two of the top players in the Atlantic Region. Like Gonzalez Sanchez and del Val del Toro, Page's win on Tuesday improved her season record to 4-2.
Â
While it had no bearing on the overall result, Alana Lewis was able to narrowly edge Fadden in the fifth flight 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Â
Slippery Rock will host West Virginia State University 4 p.m. Friday at the SRU Tennis Courts for a non-conference matchup between Atlantic Region powers.
