WEXFORD, Pa. -
The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost a non-conference match to the University of Charleston, 5-2, Sunday at the PA Tennis Academy in Wexford, Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock exits the weekend with a 1-4 overall record in 2021 while Charleston improves to 7-2 on the year with the Atlantic Region victory. The Golden Eagles swept the three doubles bouts before clinching the team victory with four singles wins.

The contest opened with a 6-1 victory by UC's Alexiann Drouin and Katie Swann in the second flight over Olivia Warner and Lacey Cohen. Charleston then earned the doubles point when Meggan William and Haarini Balakrishnan bested Amy Varckette and Lauren Fadden, 6-2, in the third flight.

While the doubles point was already decided, Julia Lif and Prinkle Singh were able to narrowly edge The Rock's top doubles team of Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez, 6-4.

Balakrishnan put the Golden Eagles up 2-0 on The Rock to start the singles portion of the evening as she defeated Warner 6-1, 6-1. Slippery Rock answered back with its first victory of the night when Gonzalez Sanchez downed Swann 6-4, 6-2 in the second flight. Gonzalez Sanchez has now won three consecutive singles matches.

However, a comeback for The Rock was not to be as Charleston proceeded to take the next three singles matches to finish off the team victory.

Singh beat Page in the first flight 6-4, 6-4 followed by a 6-3, 6-3 win by Drouin over Cohen in the third slot and a 6-2, 6-0 triumph by Lif against Varckette from the sixth flight.

Reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Athlete of the Week Gabi del Val del Toro improved her record on the year to 3-2 when she earned a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 comeback victory against Balancho in the match's final contest.

Slippery Rock will look to snap its two-match losing streak when it travels to Mercyhurst University Tuesday. Opening serve is set for noon.
