SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision against Indiana University (Pa.) Saturday at the SRU Tennis Courts.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division loss drops The Rock's record to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in league contests. The Crimson Hawks improve to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in PSAC West play with the win.

Slippery Rock earned the doubles point while also recording victories in the top two singles flights, but IUP was able to take the victory with four singles wins.

SRU opened the day on a high note by earning the first team point of the afternoon thanks to back-to-back wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles.

Amy Varckette and
Lauren Fadden won their third consecutive match of the season by downing Laura Dunarova and Abby Jones in the third flight.

Lois Page and
Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez also stretched their personal winning streak to three matches by besting Lydia Vlachou and Idoia Huerta, 6-4, from the top flight to clinch the doubles point for The Rock.

While it had no bearing on the team scoring, Karolin Kirchtag and Katy Graydon were able to narrowly edge
Lacey Cohen and
Olivia Warner in the second doubles flight, 7-6.

Indiana took a 2-1 when it began the singles portion of the contest by securing victories in the sixth and fifth flights as Jones edged Fadden and Dunarova defeated Warner with matching 6-4, 6-2 victories.

Gonzalez Sanchez proceeded to pull The Rock even with IUP at 2-2 when she downed Huerta 7-5, 6-4.

However, SRU's comeback bid ended there as Indiana went on to capture victories in the third and fourth flights to clinch the team victory. Graydon bettered Cohen in the third flight 6-2, 6-2 while Vlachou was able to produce a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 win against
Gabi del Val del Toro in the fourth flight.

While the match was already decided, Page was able to earn a quality 6-7 (5), 6-3, 5-4 victory in the top singles flight against Kirchtag. Page is now 3-1 in singles contest this season.

Slippery Rock will close the weekend against Atlantic Region foe the University of Charleston 6 p.m. Sunday at the PA Tennis Academy in Wexford, Pennsylvania.
