Rock blanks Edinboro, 7-0

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team opened its 2021 PSAC West schedule with an impressive 7-0 win Saturday at Edinboro.

EDINBORO, Pa. -
The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team opened its 2021 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division schedule with an impressive 7-0 win Saturday at Edinboro University.
 
The victory improved The Rock's record to 1-2 on the year while the Fighting Scots dropped to 0-4 in 2021 with the loss.
 
Slippery Rock opened the match by sweeping doubles competition before cruising to six straight singles victories on the way to earning its first team win of the season.
 
Amy Varckette and Lauren Fadden got The Rock started with a 6-0 shutout of Emily Cevera and Lauren Chiacchia in the third flight followed by a 6-1 triumph by Olivia Warner and Lacey Cohen over Marina Zottele and Ana Nadai in the second flight to secure the doubles point for SRU.
 
Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez sent Slippery Rock into the singles portion of Saturday's match with even more momentum as SRU's top duo downed Kaede Tada and Torye Calleja, 6-2.
 
The duos of Varckette / Fadden and Page / Gonzalez Sanchez are both 2-1 this season following their respective wins Saturday.
 
Varckette proceeded to add another point to SRU's total with a 6-0, 6-1 win from the sixth flight against Cevera in what was the first completed singles bout of the day.
 
Cohen and Page followed Varckette with wins from the third and first flights, respectively, to clinch the team victory for SRU. Cohen bested Zottele 6-0, 6-2 while Page defeated Tada 6-1, 6-2. Cohen is a perfect 2-0 on the season while Page has now won two straight matches to improve to 2-1.
 
Slippery Rock closed out the day with three more wins out of the second, fourth and fifth flights. Gonzalez Sanchez bested Calleja 6-2, 6-0, Gabi del Val del Toro then bettered Nadai 6-2, 6-0 and Warner finished the contest with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Anna Zak.
 
Slippery Rock begins a two-match homestand at the SRU Tennis Courts March 27 when it hosts Indiana University (Pa.) in a PSAC West showdown.
