No. 6 Rock runs by Edinboro, 49-13

No. 6 Slippery Rock won its 19th straight PSAC West game with a 49-13 victory on the road at Edinboro University Saturday.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The sixth ranked Slippery Rock University football team won its 19th straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game and remained unbeaten on the year with a 49-13 victory at Edinboro University Saturday afternoon.

The Rock improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in PSAC West action with the victory and extended their PSAC West winning streak to 19 games dating back to Oct. 21, 2017. Edinboro dropped to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in PSAC West games with the loss.

The Fighting Scots got off on the wrong foot on Homecoming Saturday after attempting to go for it on fourth down in their own territory on the first series of the game. Slippery Rock stuffed the rushing attempt and took over on the Edinboro 30-yard line. The Rock took just five plays to find the end zone and scored with an Andrew Koester quarterback keeper with 11:00 to play in the quarter. SRU converted a two-point conversion with DJ Opsatnik throwing to Max Maciejewski to lead 8-0.

Edinboro would hold the ball for nearly 20 minutes in the first half, but would never lead in the game. The Rock converted a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Wynn Jr. and got a 58-yard rushing score from Cinque Sweeting on the way to leading 22-10 at the break.

Edinboro capitalized on an SRU turnover on the first series of the second half and converted a field goal off the turnover, but SRU slammed the door from there and outscored the hosts 27-0 over the final 25 minutes.

Slippery Rock posted a 529-291 advantage in total offense after rushing for a season-high 263 yards and passing for 266 yards. Edinboro rushed for 164 yards on 35 attempts and threw for 127 yards while recording a 34:06 to 25:54 advantage in time of possession.

The Fighting Scots dropped six men into coverage, doubled Henry Litwin on nearly every play and dared Slippery Rock to run the football to beat them, so The Rock obliged. SRU threw it just eight total times in the first half and finished the game with 39 rushing attempt to 24 passing attempts.

Koester completed 14-of-24 passes for 266 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions while also rushing for one score on the ground.

Wynn caught two of those touchdown passes and finished with five catches for 102 yards. Sweeting caught two passes for 47 yards and one touchdown and also rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries. Maciejewski caught one 14-yard touchdown pass to go along with his two-point conversion and Izzy Adeoti made his SRU debut and caught a 49-yard pass on his first play of the season.

Tim Smith rushed for 95 yards on 17 carries. Chris D'Or added 53 rushing yards and 15 receiving yards and Reis Watkins rushed for 27 yards.

Selvin Haynes led The Rock defense with 10 total tackles and a half-sack. Savion Harrison and Dalton Holt each had eight tackles, while Tim Vernick and Peyton Remish both had 1.5 tackles for loss and Chad Kuhn and Munchie Johnson each had one sack. Khadir Roberts pulled down one interception for SRU's only takeaway of the day.

Edinboro was led by Anfreenee Williams with 80 rushing yards on 19 carries. Isaac Bernard made his first career start at quarterback and completed 19-of-29 passes for 127 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Slippery Rock will now turn its focus to its annual Homecoming game and will welcome rival Indiana (Pa.) next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff between two of the three teams currently tied atop the PSAC West standings (SRU, Cal U and IUP are all 3-0 in PSAC West play).
