Rock loses at No. 6 East Stroudsburg, 3-1

The Slippery Rock field hockey team opened its three-game road trip with a 3-1 loss at sixth-ranked East Stroudsburg Saturday.

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team opened its three-game road trip with a 3-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division loss at sixth-ranked East Stroudsburg Saturday.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 4-7 on the season overall and 1-4 in league games while the nationally ranked Warriors improve to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC with the win.

Slippery Rock was led on the day by Jessie Trube who converted a penalty corner in the second quarter for her team-leading seventh goal of the year. The score was the 20th of Trube's career, tying her for seventh in program history for career goals with Lindsay Brown (2011-13), Jane Machuga (1975-78) and Dina Pezzimenti (1989-92).

Trube accounted for two of The Rock's three shots Saturday with Leslie Colliver supplying the other attempt.

Goalkeeper Grace Burker made eight saves while allowing three goals over 60 minutes.

Following a scoreless first quarter, East Stroudsburg scored three goals over an eight-minute stretch in the second period before Trube scored SRU's lone goal via a penalty stroke with 11 seconds remaining in the opening half.

Coming out of the half, Slippery Rock's defense did an excellent job of holding the Warriors at-bay over the final two quarters as The Rock successfully defended eight penalty corners and 13 shot attempts to maintain the two-goal deficit.

However, SRU was able to register only one attempt over the final 30 minutes, an attempt by Trube that was blocked in the 37th minute, as ESU held on for a 3-1 win.

For the game, East Stroudsburg held advantages over The Rock in total shots (21-3), shots on goal (11-1) and penalty corners (13-3).

Slippery Rock continues its road excursion 11 a.m. Oct. 16 at No. 5 Kutztown University.
