SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team fell at home to No. 17 Gannon University, 1-0, Wednesday at James Egli Field.
The loss snaps Slippery Rock's two-game winning streak and moves its record to 4-3-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the PSAC West while Gannon improves to 8-1-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in the conference.
Gannon scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal with just eight minutes left to play when Joe Knox received a cross from Herman Aanberg, who caught the Slippery Rock defense on its heels and snuck a ball past goalkeeper
Hossam Aly.
Slippery Rock was unable to tally the equalizer following Gannon's goal as the nationally ranked Golden Knights held on for the tight one-goal victory.
SRU placed four shots on goal Wednesday as
Samuel Hillman had an attempt saved by Gannon's Maximiliano Rocco in the 11th minute followed in the first half by stops from Rocco off of shots by
Joey Moeller (17:10) and
Anthony Gagliardi II (25:43) in addition to another save on a Gagliardi II attempt in the 62nd minute.
All told, Slippery Rock registered 11 total shots as Gagliardi II, Moeller, Hillman and
Harry Griffin all produced two attempts each with
Brian McCarthy,
Ramses Minaya and
Alex Plimmer adding one apiece.
Aly made five saves over 90 minutes.
As a team, Gannon held advantages over The Rock in total shots (13-11) and shots on goal (5-4) while SRU led the Golden Knights in corners (3-2).
SRU will look to return to its winning ways when it takes to the road to play at Shippensburg University 2 p.m. Saturday.
