Rock falls to Shippensburg, 2-1

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team fell at Shippensburg, 2-1, in its final non-conference match of the season Saturday.

SHIPPENSBURG Pa. - The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team fell at Shippensburg University, 2-1, in its final non-conference match of the season Saturday.
 
With the non-conference loss, The Rock moves to 4-4-2 on the year while Ship improves to 4-3-3 in 2021.
 
Slippery Rock's offense was led by Arturo Pla Hernandis who netted what would be The Rock's only goal of the contest on an assist by Alejandro Fernandez with less than four minutes remaining in the first half of play.
 
Taking part in the in Slippery Rocks offensive attack were Nick Iagnemma (3 shots), Joey Moeller (2 shots), Ramses Minaya (1 shot, 1 shot on goal) as well as Fernandez, Samuel Hillman, Mo Kanani and Alex Plimmer all with a shot apiece.
 
Goalkeepers Hossam Aly and Derek Hoffman split time evenly for SRU. In the first 45, Aly made one save while allowing two goals. In the final 45 minutes, Hoffman made two saves without allowing a goal.
 
The Red Raiders struck first, slipping a ball passed Aly in the 17th minute to take the early lead. Slippery Rock would not be able to answer before Ship extended its lead to 2-0 in the 30th minute after sneaking another ball out of the reach of Aly.
 
The Rock found their way onto the scoreboard with less than four minutes reaming in the first half when Fernandez set Pla Hernandis up for his second goal of the season. The assist was Fernandez's team-leading fourth of the season. He exits the weekend with a Rock-best eight points so far this season.
 
Coming out of the break, Slippery Rock outshot the Red Raiders 5-3 but neither team would find the back of the net again before the final buzzer, securing the 2-1 Ship victory.
 
Slippery Rock held the advantages over Shippensburg in total shots (13-9) and corner kicks (4-1) while Ship led in shots on goal (5-3).
 
The Rock finishes their two-game road trip with a PSAC West matchup at the University of Pitt-Johnstown 1:30 p.m. Oct. 13.
