The Slippery Rock men's soccer team fell, 4-0, on the road at Mercyhurst Wednesday night in a key PSAC West match.
ERIE, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team fell, 4-0, on the road at Mercyhurst University Wednesday night in a key Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match.
With the loss The Rock falls to 5-6-2 overall and 2-3-0 in the PSAC West while the Lakers improve to 7-3-2 on the year and 2-1-2 in the division.
The victory moves Mercyhurst past The Rock into third place in the PSAC West standings with five games to play in the regular season. The top three teams in the PSAC East and West standings at the end of the year qualify for the conference tournament.
The Mercyhurst offensive surge was brought on by the duo of Sidney Warden, who collected a hat trick, and Tom Barry who tallied a score as well, three of the four goals came in the first 20 minutes of play.
The Rock's offensive efforts were led by
Harry Griffin and
Dan Schearer with a shot on goal each and rounded out by
Arturo Pla Hernandis and
Ramses Minaya who each fired a shot apiece.
Aly finished the night with seven saves.
Warden opened the scoring efforts with a goal just five minutes into the match beating The Rock defense and fired a shot into the low right corner out of the reach of goalkeeper
Hossam Aly. Barry added the second goal of the contest soaring a shot, from about 20 yards out, over the head of Aly in the 12th minute.
Warden tacked on what would be the final two goals of the match, the first at 18:37, going one-on-one with Aly, and the last, at 78:56, on a rocket to the top left corner out of Aly's reach giving the Lakers a 4-0 advantage on the game's final goal.
Mercyhurst held the advantage over Slippery Rock in total shots (16-5), shots on goal (11-3) while both teams had four corner kicks apiece.
Slippery Rock continues its three-game PSAC West road trip at Seton Hill University 2 p.m. Saturday.
