GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team fell on the road in double overtime to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division rival Seton Hill University, 1-0, on Saturday.
With the loss, Slippery Rock falls to 5-7-2 on the year overall and 2-4-0 in the division while Seton Hill improves to 8-5-1 overall and 5-1-0 in PSAC West play.
Slippery Rock's offense was led by
Harry Griffin with two shots on goal and rounded out by
Alejandro Fernandez (4 shots, 1 shot on goal),
Arturo Pla Hernandis (2 shots, 1 shot on goal),
Anthony Gagliardi II (2 shots, 1 shot on goal),
Alex Plimmer (2 shots), and
Nick Iagnemma,
Brian McCarthy,
Joey Moeller,
Ramses Minaya, and
Joe Skillicorn all with one shot apiece.
Through 101 minutes, goalkeeper
Derek Hoffman made five saves and allowed one goal.
The match was a defensive battle, with The Rock defense standing tough fighting off the first seven shots by the Griffins including two saves by Hoffman through the first half.
Seton Hill's defense returned the favor as it held The Rock scoreless in the opening 45 minutes, defending seven SRU shots to send the game into halftime in a scoreless tie.
Both teams continued their strong defensive showings through the second half of play with Seton Hill successfully clearing another nine SRU shots, as well as seven corner kick attempts, while Hoffman collected another pair of saves before the end of regulation.
Slippery Rock registered the only shot during the first overtime period, an attempt by Iagnemma that sailed wide. However, just 50 seconds into the second overtime period, Seton Hill capitalized on a corner kick with Archie Lock netting the golden goal and giving the Griffins the close victory.
Despite the loss, SRU held advantages over Seton Hill in total shots (17-14) and corner kicks (13-7) while the Griffins led in shots on goal (6-5).
Slippery Rock ends its three-game road trip at California University (Pa.) for a PSAC West match 5 p.m. Oct. 27.
