Rock rolls to 3-1 victory over Seton Hill

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team topped PSAC West rival Seton Hill, 3-1, in its homecoming match Saturday.

SLIPPERY ROCK Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team topped Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division rival Seton Hill University, 3-1, in its homecoming match Saturday at James Egli Field.

The win improves The Rock's record to 9-2-2 overall and 8-2-1 in the PSAC West while Seton Hill falls to 3-7-1 and 2-7-1 in the conference.

The Rock's offensive surge was led by the duo of Rachel Edge with two goals and Kayla Swope with a goal of her own while the trio of Katy Ericson, Nina King and Sydney Patrick all dished out assists.

Edge's goals extended her season total to a team-leading nine which moves her to first in the conference, as well as moving her into ninth in the SRU career book with 25 total. Swope marked her sixth goal of the season.

In 90 minutes, goalkeeper Emma Yoder made one save while allowing one goal. With the win, Yoder moved into third in the SRU record book in career wins at 29.

The Rock and Seton Hill played a tightly-contested first half with neither team being able to score until the 42nd minute when Alexis Garia netted a score for the Griffins to take the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Slippery Rock answered quickly as a blocked shot by Swope would lead to another blocked shot by Ericson and an eventual put back goal by Edge to tie the match in the 53rd minute.

The Rock continued to dominate the offensive attack with Edge collecting her second goal of the game at 72:19 when received a free kick from King to beat SHU goalkeeper Grace Kenyon, putting The Rock ahead 2-1.

Swope added an insurance goal of her own with less than two minutes left when Patrick dished her a perfectly placed ball that she sent of the reach of Kenyon to the right to secure the 3-1 victory.

Slippery Rock held a sizable advantage in total shots (25-3), shots on goal (14-2) and corner kicks (14-1).

Slippery Rock hits the road for a match at Mercyhurst University 3 p.m. Oct. 20 in what will be a key PSAC West contest.
