Shumaker's walk-off leads to split at Spring Games

Highlighted by a three-run walk-off double by Camie Shumaker against Assumption, the Slippery Rock softball team split two games Monday at The Spring Games.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team earned a split for the third straight day after a pair of contests against Assumption College and Bentley University Monday at The Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida.

The Rock (5-7) picked up a 7-6 walk-off win over Assumption (1-4) in game one followed by a 9-1 defeat against Bentley (5-5) in game two.

Camie Shumaker led The Rock offense on the day, going a combined 2-for-5 including the game-winning double in game one to go along with three RBI. Anna Villies recorded three runs scored on the day while Aubrey Allen, Maggie Moore and Becca Roesch added one RBI apiece.

Game One: Rock 7, Assumption 6
The Rock trailed by two runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but scored four runs capped off by a walk-off RBI-double by Shumaker (4-2, 1.98 ERA) to secure a 7-6 comeback victory over Assumption to open play Monday.

The Greyhounds got out to a 6-2 lead after a four-run top of the sixth inning, its largest lead of the day to that point after a trio of RBI hits along with a sacrifice fly. SRU responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame when Allen recorded an RBI-groundout, scoring Villies from third to cut the AC lead to 6-3.

Shumaker settled back in after the four-run sixth, working out of a runner on third with one out jam to hold the deficit at 6-3 heading to the bottom of the inning.

A leadoff single by Regan Hozak followed by a Lexie Zavarelle walk prompted an Assumption pitching change, bringing starting pitcher Mia Nowicki's (1-2, 4.85 ERA) day to a close after six innings of work in favor of relief pitcher Erin Barry (0-1, 2.69 ERA).

Following the pitching change, a Sara Mikulec single loaded the bases for Roesch who recorded an RBI-groundout to cut the Greyhound lead to 6-4. One batter later, Villies drew a walk to put the winning run on base with Shumaker coming to the plate.

On a 1-0 count, Shumaker lined a double into the right-center field gap, clearing the bases and securing a 7-6 walk-off win for The Rock. The walk-off victory marked the first for SRU since March 4, 2019 against West Chester.

Shumaker led The Rock offense in game one in support of her own cause, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. The junior also got the win on the mound allowing six runs, four being earned along with walking six and striking out seven in the complete-game effort.

The win for Shumaker marks the 25th victory of her career, moving the junior into eighth place on the SRU career wins list. The program record for wins in a career currently belongs to Brooke Dawson (2015-18) with 33 is well in reach for Shumaker as a junior.

Villies added two hits and three runs scored while Maggie Moore also had two hits in game one.

Nowicki took a no decision after allowing five runs on seven hits along with walking one and striking out four over six innings of work with Barry taking the loss after allowing two runs on two hits while walking one over a third of an inning.

Game Two: Bentley 9, Slippery Rock 1
Bentley used a four-run fourth inning and a one-run, two hit performance by Kayleigh Fiztpatrick (1-0, 2.33 ERA) in the circle to secure a 9-1 victory over The Rock in six innings.
