Rock drops two at Spring Games

The Slippery Rock softball team was swept in a pair of matchups against Wayne State (Neb.) and Le Moyne Wednesday afternoon to conclude day four of The Spring Games.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team was swept in a pair of matchups against Wayne State College (Neb.) and Le Moyne College Wednesday afternoon to conclude day four of The Spring Games.

The Rock (5-9) opened the day with a 2-0 loss to Wayne State (8-12) followed by a 4-1 defeat in game two against Le Moyne (7-5).

Becca Roesch led the SRU offense over the two-game slate, picking up two hits including a double against Le Moyne. Anna Villies also added two hits against the Dolphins while Alexa Guglielmino recorded an RBI.

Game One: Wayne State 2, Slippery Rock 0
Wayne State jumped out to an early lead in game one on a pair of RBI hits to take a 2-0 advantage it wouldn't relinquish thanks to a strong outing in the circle from the pairing of starting pitcher Hadley Chvatal (4-2) and reliever Sloan Cooksey.

Chvatal opened game one with four innings of scoreless work, allowing just one hit while striking out three and walking four before giving way to Cooksey who picked up her third save of the season giving up two hits and striking out four over the final three innings of work.

Rock game one starter Camie Shumaker (4-3, 1.88 ERA) turned in a solid performance in her own right, allowing just two runs, one being earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings.

Aubrey Allen, Regan Hozak and Sara Mikulec provided the SRU offense in game one, tallying one hit apiece while Hozak also walked twice.

Game Two: Le Moyne 4, Rock 1
Slippery Rock struck first against Le Moyne in game two when Guglielmino recorded an RBI groundout, scoring Mikulec from third to give The Rock a 1-0 first inning lead but, the Dolphins responded with four unanswered runs, three of which came in the top of the third.

The run support in the third would be more than enough for Le Moyne starting pitcher Peyton Bellrose (3-1) who allowed one run on eight hits and four walks while striking out five in the complete game effort.

In the second start of her collegiate career, Claire Zimmerman (0-2, 5.14 ERA) allowed four runs, three being earned, on two hits while walking two and striking out one over 2.2 innings before giving way to Chloe Sharman (1-4, 4.70 ERA) who didn't concede a run in the final 4.1 innings of relief, allowing three hits while recording three strikeouts.

Roesch led The Rock offense in game two, going 2-for-4 with a double while Villies also added a 2-for-4 showing against Le Moyne. Guglielmino drove in the lone SRU run while going 1-for-4 at the plate.
