WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team split a pair of contests against American International College and Upper Iowa University Sunday to conclude day two of The Spring Games.
The Rock (4-6) picked up a 7-1 game one win over American International (2-1) before falling to Upper Iowa (2-6), 5-1, in game two.
Alexa Guglielmino and
Aubrey Allen led The Rock offense over the two-game set, recording two RBI apiece while
Anna Villies finished the day a combined 3-for-5 with a double.
Camie Shumaker (3-2, 1.62 ERA) recorded a 2-for-3 showing at the plate with an RBI in game two.
Game One: Rock 7, American International 1
The Rock used a big second inning and a complete-game, one-run performance by
Chloe Sharman (1-3, 2.22 ERA) in the circle to secure a 7-1 victory over American International to open play Sunday.
Sharman's run support was taken care of when SRU plated six runs in the second inning as the sophomore went on to record a career-high six strikeouts while surrendering just five hits along with walking two over seven innings of work.
With the SRU lead already at 4-0 in the second thanks to a three-consecutive RBI-singles by Guglielmino,
Sara Mikulec and
Regan Hozak, Allen ripped a single down the right field line to score Mikulec and
Becca Roesch giving Slippery Rock a 6-0 lead it wouldn't relinquish.
SRU added a seventh run in the third inning on a Guglielmino sacrifice fly, scoring Villies for The Rock center fielder's second RBI of the game.
The lone American International run came in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI-single, but that would be the only run allowed by Sharman in her first complete-game effort of 2020.
Alexis Jimenez (0-1) took the loss for AIC allowing seven runs, three being earned on nine hits while walking one and striking out three over six innings of work.
Allen and Guglielmino led The Rock offense against the Yellow Jackets by driving in two RBI apiece while Mikulec, Hozak and Roesch had an RBI each. Villies tallied a 3-for-3 day with a double and two runs scored to lead SRU in the hit column.
Game Two: Upper Iowa 5, Rock 1
Upper Iowa took advantage of five Slippery Rock errors while Abby McKay (1-2) allowed just one run on six hits in a complete game effort against SRU to secure a 5-1 victory.
The Peacocks used a two-run fourth inning to stretch its lead to 4-0 on back-to-back RBI hits before tacking on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when a run scored on the final Rock fielding error of the afternoon.
The lone Slippery Rock run came in the top of the sixth when Shumaker lined a single into the right centerfield gap, scoring pinch-runner
Lexie Zavarelle from second.
Shumaker, the game two starter in the circle, took the loss after allowing five runs, two being earned on seven hits while walking two and striking out three in six innings of work. The junior also led The Rock offense in support of her own cause, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
