Rock earns split on day one of Spring Games

The Slippery Rock softball team split a pair of contests on day one of The Spring Games.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team split a pair of contests on day one of The Spring Games.

SRU (3-5) picked up a 5-0 game one victory over the University of Findlay (11-6) but fell to Ohio Dominican University (6-10) in game two, 5-1.

Becca Roesch tallied three hits including two home runs and five RBI over the two games to lead The Rock offense while Alexa Guglielmino, Anna Villies and Lexie Zavarelle each recorded a double against Ohio Dominican in game two. Camie Shumaker (3-1, 1.48 ERA) helped her own case against Findlay, going 2-for-3 at the plate in addition to recording her fourth consecutive complete-game on the mound.

Game One: Rock 5, Findlay 0
The Rock began Saturday with a convincing 5-0 victory over the Oilers on the back of a multi-home run day from Roesch, the second such effort of The Rock third baseman's career.

Roesch became the first SRU softball player to hit two home runs in a game since Lauren Hawley (2015-18) did so in 2018 against Cal U.

Not to be overlooked was the stellar effort of Shumaker in the circle. The junior recorded a complete-game shutout, holding UF to only five hits while striking out four over seven innings of work.

Shumaker added a 2-for-3 day at the plate while reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Athlete of the Week Sara Mikulec finished 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.

Roesch launched a two-run home run in the first inning followed by a three-run blast in the third which was more than enough run suppourt for Shumaker, who registered her first shutout of the year.

UF's Carly Brandon (1-1) took the loss for the Oilers after surrendering all five Rock runs over two innings in the circle. Lyndsey Seamon (0-0) tossed four shutout innings in relief of Brandon to end the game.

Game Two: Ohio Dominican 5, Rock 1
Ohio Dominican parlayed a big third inning and a complete game, one run performance by Syndney Long (2-5) in the circle into a 5-1 victory over SRU.

The Panthers supplied Long with ample run support via a three-run third inning as the sophomore went on to strikeout seven Rock batters while surrendering seven hits and zero walks over seven innings of work.

ODU added its fourth run of the game in the fifth on a bases loaded walk followed by a tack on run in the sixth when a run scored on a passed ball.

The lone SRU run came in the third when Aubrey Allen grounded out to second with the bases loaded, driving in Villies to take what was Slippery Rock's only lead of the contest.

Game two starter Chloe Sharman (0-3, 9.48 ERA) allowed four runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out one over 4.1 innings before being relieved by Claire Zimmerman (0-1, 4.80 ERA). Zimmerman turned in a solid performance in relief, allowing an unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out one in the final 2.1 innings of work.

Villies led The Rock offense in game two, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored while Allen, Guglielmino, Mikulec, Roesch and Zavarelle each added a hit.
