SCOUTING THE ROCK

•  LAST TIME OUT – SRU picked up its first two victories of the 2020 season in a split of a four-game series against Virginia State University. Rock second baseman Sara Mikulec led the SRU offense, going a combined 6-for-16 with five RBI, three runs scored, a triple and two walks.

In the circle, Camie Shumaker led the Slippery Rock pitching staff after recording a combined 1.35 ERA over 20 innings of work against the Trojans allowing 11 hits and walking 10 while striking out 10 in two starts.

•  NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS – After splitting a four-game set against Virginia State, SRU now sits at 50 non-conference wins in the six seasons under the direction of head coach Stacey Rice. The 50 wins rank as the second-most in that span among Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division teams trailing only Seton Hill with 51.

•  STRONG START FOR SHUMAKER – After her stellar showing at VSU, Shumaker is off to a strong start in her 2020 campaign as the anchor of the Slippery Rock pitching staff.

Through three starts, all being complete games, Shumaker (2-1) leads The Rock pitching staff with a 1.88 ERA, 16 strikeouts and a .223 batting average against.

•  ROUNDING OUT THE STAFF – Rock pitchers Chloe Sharman and Claire Zimmerman also figure to see time in the circle during The Spring Games. Sharman (0-2) holds an 11.67 ERA along with a 2.83 WHIP, walking three and striking out six over six innings of work.

Following making her first collegiate start in game four against Virginia State, Zimmerman (0-1) has a 5.60 ERA and a 2.30 WHIP while recording six strikeouts and seven walks.

•  RED HOT ROESCH – Rock third baseman Becca Roesch has caught fire in the early going of the 2020 season, leading Slippery Rock in nearly every offensive category.

On the season, Roesch leads The Rock offense with team-high .450 batting average, .478 on-base percentage, .450 slugging percentage, nine hits and nine total bases while being tied for the team-lead in RBI with five.

Among players in the PSAC with at least six games played, Roesch has the third-highest batting average trailing only Mansfield's Alli McGovern (.483) and Mercyhurst's Madison Fry (.455).

•  MIKULEC MAKING A MARK – Mikulec was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week after leading the Slippery Rock offense against Virginia State.

Through six games, Mikulec is tied for the team-lead in RBI (5) while ranking third in slugging percentage (.381), on-base percentage (.348) and OPS (.729).

•  MOVING ON UP – SRU centerfielder Alexa Guglielmino recorded her eighth career triple in game three against Virginia State. Guglielmino is now tied for the second-most career triples in program history with Jordan Zeunges (2008-11). Emily Nagle holds the program record for career triples with 11.

Through six games this season, Guglielmino is tied for the team-lead in runs scored while batting .278 with two RBI, a double and a triple.

•  STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT – Right fielder Anna Villies has highlighted The Rock's 2020 freshmen class with her contributions at the plate through six games.

Villies is tied for the team lead in runs scored (4) while ranking second in RBI (2) and fourth in both batting average (.267) and OPS (.656).

•  LAST YEAR IN FLORIDA – In last season's trip to Clermont, Florida for the NTC Softball Tournament, SRU went 5-7 with victories over Concord, Caldwell, Millersville, West Chester and Le Moyne.

Over spring break, The Rock were led on offense by Maggie Moore who compiled a team-best seven RBI along with a home run, a double and six runs scored. Aubrey Allen finished the trip with a .350 batting average (7-for-20) with three runs scored and six walks.

In the circle, Shumaker led the way with a 4-3 record along with a 3.42 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and 29 strikeouts while only walking six batters.

•  OPPONENT CHECK – In its trip to The Spring Games, SRU will encounter some tough competition including three teams (Ohio Dominican, Ashland and Bridgeport) who won 30 or more games last season.

Last season, the teams The Rock will face in Winter Haven recorded a combined 255-262 (.493) record including eight conference tournament appearances, one conference championship and a NCAA Tournament appearance (Bridgeport).
