Rock splits doubleheader vs. Kutztown

The Slippery Rock baseball team split a doubleheader against Kutztown Wednesday by rebounding from a 7-3 loss in game one with a 6-1 victory in game two.

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Kutztown University Wednesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock rebounded from a 7-3 loss in game one by defeating the Golden Bears 6-1 in game two. The split moves The Rock's record to 7-3 overall while Kuztown exits the doubleheader at 7-4.

The trio of Abraham Mow, Connor Hamilton and Vince Donato all had hits in both games of the doubleheader. Mow had three RBI and a double to go with his first home run of the season. Hamilton and Donato had one RBI apiece as well with Hamilton extending his hitting streak to nine games in the process.

GAME ONE: Kutztown 7 – Slippery Rock 3
A disastrous first inning proved too much for The Rock to overcome in a 7-3 loss to the Golden Bears in the opener. Kutztown plated four runs in what turned out to be the key inning of the opener on the way to its four-run victory.

Slippery Rock chipped away at the Golden Bears' early lead with one run in the third via a RBI-single by Hamilton followed by two more runs in the fourth thanks to a run-scoring single by Joe Sibeto and a sacrifice fly by Mow that plated Luke Trueman to make it a 4-3 game.

However, Slippery Rock's comeback bid would end there as KU proceeded to score two more runs in the fifth followed by an additional score in the seventh while holding SRU without a hit over the game's final three innings en route to the win.

The Rock collected five hits in game one off the bats of Mow, Hamilton, Donato, Sibeto and Nick Reynosa to go with walks from Jon Kozarian and Alex Robenolt.

JT Wolke (1-1) was the pitcher of record for The Rock after going 5.0 innings in his first start of the year and allowing six runs, only two of which were earned, on three hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts. Derek Boben came out of the bullpen to pitch the final two innings, surrendering one run while registering one strikeout.

Trevor Leverington (1-1) picked up the win for Kutztown after scattering three runs on five hits and a walk over 4.0 innings. Collin Bishop drove in two runs for the KU offense.

GAME TWO: Slippery Rock 6 – Kutztown 1
Game two of Wednesday's doubleheader completely belonged to The Rock as SRU scored five unanswered runs to earn the split via a 6-1 victory over Kutztown.

Two-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Pitcher of the Week Andy McClymonds (3-0) was once again sharp for The Rock as he picked up his third win of the year by pitching six innings and striking out three batters while giving up just one run on four hits and three walks.

McClymonds has now allowed just three earned runs over his first three starts of the year (18.0 innings). Trueman came on to finish the contest for The Rock with a perfect seventh inning of relief.

Mow and Quentin Brown both belted two-run home runs in game two while freshman Koby Bubash recorded a 3-for-3, one-run, one-double showing. Trueman was responsible for The Rock's other multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI before pitching an inning of relief.

Hamitlon, Donato and Joel Spishock accounted for the other three Rock hits in what was a 10-hit game for SRU.

SRU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by way of a first inning RBI-single by Donato and never looked back. Mow drove a home run to left field in the second inning and Brown tallied a two-run shot of his own in the fourth to effectively put the game away at 5-0.

Kutztown's lone run of the contest came in the sixth inning, but McClymonds induced an inning-ending double play to end the frame with SRU still holding a solid four-run lead. The Rock picked up a final run of the day on a Trueman RBI followed by his flawless seventh inning on the mound to seal the win.

Aaron Cleveland was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles for Kutztown in game two. Starting pitcher Zach Moretski gave up three runs over 3.0 innings of work in the loss.

Slippery Rock returns to competition for another non-conference doubleheader March 17 at Lock Haven University. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
