PETERSBURG, Va. – The Slippery Rock University softball team finished off its four-game series at Virginia State University with a non-conference doubleheader split Sunday afternoon.
Â
SRU (2-4) won game one, 6-3, in eight innings but the Trojans (2-8) bounced back to take a 6-1 victory in game two.
Â
Maggie Moore tallied three hits over the doubleheader while adding two RBI.
Becca Roesch and
Alexa Guglielmino each added two hits and an RBI apiece over the two games while
Holland Tolliver walked twice.
Â
Game One: Slippery Rock 6 – Virginia State 3 (8 innings)
The Rock rebounded from a one-run fifth inning deficit by scoring five runs over the final three frames to earn a solid 6-3 comeback victory in game one.
Â
Trailing 2-1,
Aubrey Allen led off the fifth inning with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Guglielmino setting up The Rock with the tying run on second base and one out. Two batters later, a Roesch single sent Allen home to tie the game at two apiece.
Â
The contest remained tied through the seventh, forcing extra innings for the second time in three games.
Â
In the top of the eighth, The Rock took advantage of three Virginia State errors en route to a three-run frame capped off by a Guglielmino RBI-single to take a commanding 6-2 lead.
Â
The Trojans threatened a comeback in the bottom of the frame, cutting the SRU lead to 6-3 on an RBI groundout, but
Camie Shumaker (2-1, 1.88 ERA) forced a groundout to end the game and secure the 6-3 victory for Slippery Rock.
Â
Shumaker turned in her second consecutive complete game against Virginia State, allowing three runs, one being earned, on four hits and four walks while striking out six over eight innings.
Â
Moore was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Roesch and Guglielmino added two hits and an RBI apiece.
Â
VSU starting pitcher Brooklynn Bilyard (0-5) was handed her fifth loss of 2020 despite a complete game effort, allowing six runs, only one being earned, on six hits and five walks while striking out three.
Â
Game Two: Virginia State 6 – Slippery Rock 1
Virginia State used a four-run second inning and a solid performance from Leah Harrison (2-0) in the circle to salvage the doubleheader split in a 6-1 victory over The Rock in game two.
Â
In her first collegiate start,
Claire Zimmerman (0-1, 2.30 ERA) scattered 11 hits over five innings of work allowing six runs, four being earned, while striking out three and walking one before being relieved by
Chloe Sharman in the sixth. Sharman retired the side in order while recording a strikeout in her lone inning of work.
Â
Anna Villies and Moore each went 1-for-3 to pace The Rock in game two while Roesch recorded an RBI and
Regan Hozak scored a run.
Â
The Trojans supplied Harrison with more than enough run support following a four-run second inning as the freshman went on to strikeout eight Rock batters while surrendering just two hits and three walks over seven innings of work.
Â
SRU got on the board in the fourth when Hozak scored on a Roesch sacrifice fly to cut the Virginia State lead to 5-1. VSU added a run in the fifth and stranded two Rock runners on base in the sixth while retiring the side in order in the seventh to lock down the 6-1 victory.
