Rock swept at Newberry

The Slippery Rock softball team was swept in its season-opening doubleheader at Newberry Saturday afternoon.

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University softball team was swept in its season-opening doubleheader at Newberry College Saturday afternoon.
 
Newberry (9-1) opened the doubleheader with a 7-0 victory over The Rock (0-2) before completing the sweep with an 11-3 win in game two.
 
Following a scoreless first inning in game one, Newberry posted seven runs over the next four frames to take the opener.
 
SRU struggled to get its offense going against Newberry early on as starting pitcher Selice Daley (5-0) struck out 13 batters and allowed only one hit, an Aubrey Allen single in the second inning, en route to the shutout for the Wolves.
 
In the circle for Slippery Rock in the opener, Camie Shumaker (0-1) allowed seven runs, four being earned, over six innings while recording six strikeouts.
 
Paige Meyer led the Newberry offense in game one, going 3-for-4 with two RBI while Reagan Glanz also added two RBI in a 2-for-4 showing at the plate.
 
Newberry scored seven runs over the first two inning of game two before SRU responded with its first runs of the season via a two-score third inning. However, the Wolves proceeded to score four runs over the next two innings on the way to its eight-run win.
 
The Rock's bats came alive in game two as they plated three runs on four hits and two walks. Becca Roesch led the way via a 2-for-2 performance at the plate that included one RBI and a walk.
 
Maggie Moore and Anna Villies accounted for SRU's other two hits in the nightcap with Villies scoring twice and Moore driving in one run. Regan Hozak rounded out The Rock's top performers at the plate with one walk and a run scored.
 
Haley Simonds (1-0) led Newberry in all facets of game two. In the circle, she scattered three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five Rock hitters. At the plate, she hit a three-run home run in the first inning. McKenzie Barneycastle finished 3-for-4 with two RBI as well.
 
Chloe Sharman (0-1) started game two, but lasted just two innings after surrendering seven runs on seven hits and two walks. Claire Zimmerman came on for Sharman in what was her collegiate debut. She gave up four runs on four hits and four walks in two innings of work.
 
Slippery Rock returns to action when it travels to Claflin University for a doubleheader Sunday afternoon with first pitch of game one slated for 12 p.m.
