SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –
Donovan Walker snagged an offensive rebound after a blocked shot and banked in a layup as time expired to complete a 20-point second half comeback and lift the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team to an 81-80 victory over Millersville University Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action from Morrow Field House.
Millersville (8-8, 5-5 PSAC) jumped out to an 11-3 early lead and led by double figures for much of the game, including by a game-high 20 points at 66-46 with 11:33 to play in the second half, before The Rock (8-8, 4-6 PSAC) flipped the script.
Â
Will Robinson Jr. knocked down a jumper with 11:16 to go that ignited a 23-0 run that turned the game upside down. Over a stretch of 5:59, Slippery Rock shot 9-of-15 from the field, went 5-of-6 from the free throw line, turned the ball over zero times and forced two steals. On the other end, Millersville went 0-for-6 from the field and turned the ball over four times.
Â
Five different Slippery Rock players contributed to the 23-0 run during that stretch of 5:59, led by Robinson with eight points.
Micah Till added seven points,
Deontae Robertson scored four points and
Amante Britt and Walker tallied two points each.
Â
When the run was finished, Slippery Rock had erased the 20-point deficit and led 69-66 with 5:34 to play. Millersville guard Ryan Davis stopped the bleeding when he hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 69-69 with 5:21 to play.
Â
From there, the teams would trade the lead seven times over the final five minutes with the last of those coming when Walker hit the game-winner.
Â
Slippery Rock led 79-78 after Robinson hit a pair of free throws with 1:05 to play. Millersville failed to capitalize after missing the front end of a one-and-one on the other end, giving SRU the ball with under 40 seconds left and a chance to extend the lead. The Rock couldn't capitalize, turning the ball over with 20 seconds left.
Â
Khari Williams drew a foul with just over five seconds left and knocked down both free throws to put Millersville up 80-79. The game-winning play was a scramble after SRU had no timeouts remaining following the free throws. Robertson heaved a long pass down the court, which deflected off a Millersville player and was recovered by Till in the corner. Till attempted a 3-pointer and the shot was blocked by Davis for what appeared to be a game-saving play, but Walker raced by two Millersville defenders to snatch the rebound and layed it in off the glass as time expired.
Â
The wild finish marked the third game this season that Slippery Rock has played in where the winning shot was made as time expired. SRU is 2-1 in those games and is now 3-2 in games decided by three points or less. It also marked the first time all year that SRU has won a game it trailed at halftime (0-7 before Wednesday). The Rock have now played nine of their 16 games where the final score was decided by eight points or less.
Â
SRU shot 48.3 percent from the field (28-of-58), 22.7 percent from 3-point (5-of-22) and 76.9 percent from the free throw line (20-of-26). The Rock outscored Millersville 49-41 in the second half after trailing 39-32 at the break and outrebounded the Maruaders by a 41-23 margin.
Â
Till took over in the paint in the second half and finished with a game-high 28 points. He drew 11 total fouls in the game and went 13-of-15 at the free throw line while shooting 7-of-12 from the field. Till also blocked one shot to become the third player in program history with 100 career blocks and finished with two steals. He is now one steal away from becoming the only player in SRU history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 assists, 100 blocks and 100 steals.
Â
Robinson was also 7-of-12 from the field and scored 21 points while pulling down nine rebounds. Walker was the only other SRU player in double figures with 10 points.
Â
Robertson added seven points and five assists and Britt scored six points, grabbed eight rebounds, handed out four assists and had no turnovers while running the point for a full 40-minute effort with
Jared Armstrong missing his second straight game.
Will Bounds added a clutch four points off the bench to cap the top scorers.
Â
Millersville got 21 points from Williams, 18 from Justin Nwosu, 13 from Davis and 11 from James Sullivan. The Marauders shot 50.9 percent from the field (28-of-55), 45.0 percent from 3-point (9-of-20) and 75.0 percent from the free throw line (15-of-20).
Â
Slippery Rock has now won four straight and seven of the last eight meetings in the series against Millersville. The Rock will turn their focus back to PSAC Western Division action with a 3 p.m. road game Saturday at Pitt-Johnstown.
