MILFORD, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to American International College, 2-1, Saturday in a non-conference game that was played at Delaware Valley High School.
Â
Slippery Rock (0-1) produced 17 total shots, six of which were on goal, and drew 12 penalty corners all the while holding the Yellow Jackets (1-0) to just four shots and two corners. However, AIC made the most of its limited opportunities to pull out the win.
Â
Kayla Ulrich, who placed two of her three total shots on target Saturday, scored The Rock's lone goal.
Â
Jessie Trube tallied a game-high five total shots.
Courtney Page was close behind Trube with four shots of her own. Ulrich,
Emily Polakovsky (two),
Abby McKay (one),
Lauren Marks (one) and
Kalie Reed accounted for the rest of Slippery Rock's attempts.
Â
Goalkeeper
Maddie Murphy played all 60 minutes for SRU.
Â
Following a scoreless first quarter, the Yellow Jackets came away with two goals in the second quarter as Wynona Shaw found the back of the cage in the 17th minute and Sophie Schulpen snuck a shot past Murphy at 25:10 to take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
Â
After 14 unsuccessful shot attempts over the opening three quarters, Slippery Rock was finally able to break through three minutes into the fourth quarter when Ulrich beat American International goalkeeper Jessica Stone at 48:50 to cut SRU's deficit to 2-1.
Â
However, the Yellow Jackets were able to successfully defend four Slippery Rock penalty corners and two shots by Trube over the final 12 minutes of regulation to halt SRU's comeback and preserve the one-goal victory.
Â
Slippery Rock will look to bounce back from Saturday's loss when it hosts Frostburg State University 4 p.m. Sept. 10 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Â
Notes
- Ulrich's goal was the 20th of her career. Just a junior, she is already tied with Christine Peuplie (1984-86) and Lindsay Brown (2011-13) for fourth on The Rock's career goals ledger.
Â
- Ulrich will enter Tuesday's game against Frostburg State with 44 career points, the fifth highest total in program history.
