Rock downed by No. 1 Millersville, 7-1

A strong second half lifted No. 1 Millersville to a 7-1 non-conference victory over the Slippery Rock field hockey team Sunday afternoon.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - A strong second half lifted No. 1 Millersville University to a 7-1 non-conference victory over the Slippery Rock University field hockey team Sunday afternoon.
 
Slippery Rock (2-6) allowed just two goals while withstanding 24 shots and 17 penalty corners from the top-ranked Maurauders (8-0) in the opening half, but Millersville went on to score five goals over the game's final two quarters on the way to a six-goal win for MU.
 
Courtney Page accounted for The Rock's lone goal on Sunday when she took a feed from Jessie Trube and placed a shot past backup goalie Catie Brubaker in the 49th minute. Page's goal was her first of the season while Trube's assist marked her second of 2019. Trube is now tied with Kayla Ulrich for the team lead in points this season with 10 on four goals and two assists.
 
Lauren Marks added two shots on goal and Abby McKay chipped in another to round out The Rock's top offensive performers. Kalie Reed made a defensive save for The Rock as well, her second of the year.
 
Goalkeepers Hannah Nurse and Maddie Murphy did a commendable job against one of the top offenses in Division II. Nurse got the start and made 15 saves while allowing five goals over 39:20. Murphy came on for Nurse in the second half and finished with four saves and two goals allowed over 20:40 of playing time.
 
Nurse's 15 saves were the ninth most by a Slippery Rock goalkeeper in a single-game in program history.
 
Emma Boutcher led Millersville with two goals and one assist. Erica Tarsi added one goal and two assists as well. For the game, the Marauders held advantages over SRU in shots on goal (27-4), total shots (35-4) and penalty corners (22-4).
 
Slippery Rock will cap off its five-game homestand with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
