SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team closed out its five-game homestand with a 3-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference loss to Indiana University (Pa.) Wednesday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Â
On what was a rainy and humid evening, Slippery Rock (2-7, 0-2 PSAC) was limited to just one shot attempt by Indiana (5-4, 1-1 PSAC), which controlled possession for the majority of the contest.
Â
IUP opened the game with a quick score in the eighth minute when Mashayla Valentine successfully finished a pass from Blaise Cugini for the game's opening goal. Brianna Loubarsky would then stretch Indiana's advantage to 2-0 with a goal in the 22nd minute.
Â
The Crimson Hawks finished off the shutout with a score late in the third quarter when Georgiana Chiavacci, who assisted on IUP's second goal, pushed an insurance score across at 44:18 en route to the 3-0 win.
Â
Slippery Rock's best chance for a goal came in the contest's opening moments when
Kayla Ulrich weaved her way through the IUP backline and narrowly missed finishing a great backhand shot that sailed just wide of the goal.
Â
Defensively, Slippery Rock was paced by goalkeeper
Hannah Nurse and
Holly Stiller. Nurse stopped four shots and gave up three goals over 60 minutes played while Stiller made her second defensive save of the season. Stiller is now tied with
Kalie Reed for the team-lead in defensive saves in 2019.
Â
For the game, Indiana held advantages over The Rock in total shots (10-1), shots on goal (8-0) and penalty corners (3-2).
Â
Slippery Rock continues PSAC competition 1 p.m. Saturday at No. 2 West Chester University.
