Rock loses to No. 5 Kutztown, 4-0

The Slippery Rock field hockey team lost to No. 5 Kutztown, 4-0, Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to No. 5 Kutztown University, 4-0, Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 2-5 on the year overall and 0-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference while the nationally ranked Golden Bears improve to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in league play after the win.
 
With Kutztown leading 1-0 following an early goal by Mackenzie Fuhrman in the sixth minute, Leigh Roselli put any thoughts of a Rock comeback to rest by scoring two goals, one in the second quarter and another in the fourth, to give KU a comfortable 3-0 lead. Abby Thorius added an additional insurance goal in the 53rd minute en route to Kutztown's four-goal victory.
 
Courtney Page and Abby McKay paced The Rock's offense on Friday with one shot apiece. Page's attempt marked The Rock's lone shot on goal. Defensively, Jordan Barnes recorded a defensive save.
 
Hannah Nurse got the start in goal for The Rock. She played the majority of the game, making a career-high 10 saves while giving up four goals over 54:23 of playing time. Maddie Murphy came on for Nurse midway through the fourth quarter. She did not face a shot in 5:37 of action.
 
For the game, Kutztown held advantages over Slippery Rock in total shots (17-2), shots on goal (15-1) and penalty corners (17-2).
 
Slippery Rock will look to bounce back from Friday's loss when it hosts No. 1 Millersville University 12 p.m. Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
