Bangura’s late goal lifts Rock to 1-0 win at LHU

Abdallah Bangura scored a goal in the 87th minute and Matt Hunsberger made four saves in a 1-0 road victory for the Slippery Rock men’s soccer team against Lock Haven.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Abdallah Bangura scored a goal in the 87th minute and Matt Hunsberger made four saves in a 1-0 road victory for the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team against Lock Haven University Wednesday at Hubert Jack Stadium.

The win, which was Slippery Rock's third in its last four games, improves SRU's record to 3-2-1 on the season. SRU now has a winning record for the first time since the end of the 2015 season. Lock Haven drops to 2-5-0 in 2019 after the home loss.

With the game tied at 0-0 and seemingly headed for overtime, Sean Tinney played a corner kick into Alejandro Fernandez who headed the ball down to the waiting foot of Bangura who in turn flicked a shot past LHU goalkeeper Camden Cook at 86:43 to break the scoreless tie with what ended up being the game-winning goal.

The Rock's defense did not allow a shot over the game's final three minutes. Lock Haven's best chance to score in the contest's closing moments came on a corner with 13 seconds to play, but Hunsberger successfully punched the entry kick away as the final seconds came off the clock en route to a Rock victory.

Bangura's goal was his team-leading fifth of the season and third in the last two games. Tinney, who setup the game-winning goal with a perfect corner kick, recorded his third assist of the year while Fernandez picked up the first assist of his collegiate career.

Hunsberger has allowed just two goals over his last four games played and now ranks third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division in both goals against average (1.07) and save percentage (.769).

Bangura, Tinney, Dan Schearer and Cory Olix all finished the game with one shot on goal apiece to help pace The Rock's offensive attack. The majority of LHU's shots were taken in the opening 45 minutes as a stout Rock defense limited Lock Haven to just three attempts in the second half, only one of which was on target.

Slippery Rock held a 7-5 edge over the Bald Eagles in corner kicks while Lock Haven recorded a 12-8 advantage in total shots. Both teams produced four shots on goal.

Slippery Rock will look to earn its first three-game winning streak in the last four seasons with a victory 3 p.m. Saturday at Salem University.
