Rock falls to Salem in overtime, 2-1

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team fell on the road in overtime to Salem, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

SALEM, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team fell on the road in overtime to Salem University, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the loss, Slippery Rock falls to 3-3-1 this season while Salem improves to 2-4-1 in 2019.
 
The Rock was led on offense by Anthony Werth, who scored on a penalty kick in the 49th minute to give SRU a 1-0 lead. Abdallah Bangura added a team-leading three shots while Luke Picchi finished with two. 
 
The Slippery Rock offense came out firing in the first half, recording four of the first six shots of the game. SRU had opportunities to push across a score before halftime, but came away empty due to two saves by Tiger goalkeeper Luis Ramirez.
 
SRU struck offensively coming out of halftime when Werth lined a penalty kick past Ramirez for his second score of the season, giving The Rock a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.
 
Salem answered back with a goal of its own at the 76:24 mark when Andrea Morelli played a pass from Edward Tordoff to tie the game at 1-1. Bangura had a shot saved by Ramirez in the 80th minute leading to a corner kick, but SRU was unable to convert, sending the contest to overtime.
 
Just under two minutes into the first overtime period Salem was awarded a penalty kick that Morelli would convert to give the Tigers a 2-1 victory at 91:53.
 
As a team, SRU held a 10-8 advantage in total shots over Salem while the Tigers edged The Rock in shots on goal (7-5) and corner kicks (5-4).
 
Rock goalkeeper Matt Hunsberger turned in a solid performance, recording four saves in 91:53 minutes played.
 
Slippery Rock opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play when it travels to California University of Pennsylvania 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

• Bangura's three shots mark the seventh-consecutive contest the sophomore has finished with two or more shots.
