Rock blanks Coker, 3-0

The Slippery Rock field hockey team recorded a 3-0 shutout victory against Coker Sunday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team recorded a 3-0 shutout victory against Coker University Saturday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The win snapped Slippery Rock's three-game losing streak and improved its record to 2-4 overall while Coker dropped to 3-3 in 2019 with the loss.

Offensively, Slippery Rock received goals from Addy Ross, Abby McKay and Emily Polakovsky while Kayla Ulrich tallied one assist. SRU registered its second shutout of the season thanks to The Rock's goalkeeper duo of Hannah Nurse and Maddie Murphy.

Coker came out as the aggressors Sunday with four first-quarter shots, but Nurse was able to stop all four attempts to maintain the 0-0 tie heading into the second quarter.

After 12 minutes of scoreless action to open the second period, SRU took advantage of a pair of Coker cards and notched the game's first goal when Ross beat goalie Kelsey Gibbons for a score in the 28th minute to send The Rock into halftime leading 1-0.

While the first half was a back-and-forth contest, Slippery Rock controlled the final two quarters. Combined with a defensive effort that did not allow a Coker shot in the final 30 minutes, The Rock's offense maintained possession for much of the second half while attempting eight shots, two of which resulted in goals by McKay (39:01) and Polakovsky (40:59), en route to a 3-0 win.

Ross' goal was her second of the season. The goals by Polakovsky and McKay were the first of the season for both athletes. Polakovsky, McKay, Kalie Reed and Jessie Trube recorded two shots on goal apiece for The Rock. Ulrich, Ross and Lauren Marks all posted one attempt on target as well.

Nurse, who picked up the first win of her career Sunday, made four saves over three quarters of playing time. Murphy came on in the fourth quarter to finish off the shutout.

As a team, Slippery Rock held advantages over Coker in total shots (13-4), shots on goal (11-4) and penalty corners (13-0).

Slippery Rock continues its five-game homestand when it hosts No. 4 Kutztown University 5 p.m. Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
