Rock secures overtime victory at Mercyhurst

The Slippery Rock women's soccer team defeated Mercyhurst, 2-1, on the road in overtime Saturday evening.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team defeated Mercyhurst University, 2-1, on the road in overtime Saturday evening. 
 
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 5-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. With the loss, Mercyhurst falls to 2-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in division play.
 
Slippery Rock was led on offense by Tyler Spence, who scored one goal, and Rachel Edge,  who netted the game-winner in the 100th minute on an assist by Julia Mascaro. Edge added an assist on Spence's goal at the 86:38 mark as well.
 
Slippery Rock was in control on offense from kickoff, recording the first seven shots of the contest along with two corner kicks. The Mercyhurst defense stood the test of the potent Rock offensive attack as it allowed only three of the nine shots on goal.
 
The Rock outshot the Lakers 9-1 in the first half, but headed into halftime at a 0-0 draw.
 
MU attacked offensively following halftime with an Alyssa Otto goal at the 51:29 mark to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. SRU rebounded following the score recording the next four shots in regulation including two corner kicks.
 
The Rock finally converted on offense in the 87th minute when Spence scored on an long cross from Edge to tie the game at 1-1 and send the contest to overtime.
 
Slippery Rock opened the overtime with a corner kick that led to a shot by Jordyn Minda that was saved. Slippery Rock didn't miss on its next opportunity when Edge netted a pass from Mascaro for the game-winner. The goal was her fifth goal of 2019.
 
Edge's marks her second game-winning score of the season and was the first overtime victory of the season for Slippery Rock as well. 
 
SRU goalkeeper Emma Yoder finished with one save in 99 minutes for The Rock.
 
Taryn Baxter led the way on offense for Mercyhurst, recording two shots with one on goal, The Lakers goalkeeper Vilde Wold had six saves for the Lakers.
 
Slippery Rock continues PSAC Western Division play when it returns home to host Indiana University of Pennsylvania at James Egli Field 4 p.m. Wednesday.
 
GAME NOTES:
• Slippery Rock's five-game win streak is the longest its had since winning five straight last season against No. 14 Millersville, California (Pa.), Mercyhurst, West Chester and Shippensburg. 
 
• Edge has now scored in five-consecutive games. The sophomore was already the first Rock women's soccer player to score in four consecutive games since Dara Dremich in 2016.
 
• The 2-1 victory marks the fifth consecutive game The Rock has scored two or more goals. Slippery Rock owns a 9-0-1 record over the last ten games it has scored at least two goals.
