SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team defeated Seton Hill University 4-1 Wednesday afternoon at James Egli Field.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 4-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division while Seton Hill falls to 1-3-0 and 1-1-0 in division play.
Slippery Rock was led on offense by
Kayla Swope,
Jordyn Minda,
Sofia Harrison and
Rachel Edge. Each scored one goal apiece while Edge added two assists with
Shannon McIntyre and Swope adding one each.
The Rock took control on offense in the opening minutes, recording the first three shots of the contest. SRU converted in the 39th minute when Swope headed her first goal of the 2019 season in off a free kick from McIntyre to take a 1-0 lead.
The Griffins responded with a goal in the 42nd minute when Katie Kimmich played a cross from Italia Biondi into the net to tie the score at 1-1 just before halftime.
The second-half completely belonged to the Rock. SRU first responded coming out of halftime when Minda headed home her third goal of the season on a rebound off of a near miss by Edge to push the Rock lead to 2-1 in the 49th minute.
Slippery Rock continued its offensive attack in the 58th minute when Harrison played a long pass from Edge and beat the keeper to the left, extending the SRU lead to 3-1.
Edge capped off a stellar offensive day with her team-leading fourth goal of the season early in the 66th minute on a pass from Swope to secure a 4-1 home victory over the Griffins.
With Wednesday's goal, Edge has scored in four consecutive games.
SRU goalkeeper, and reigning PSAC Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week,
Emma Yoder finished the day with one save in 90 minutes.
Katie Kimmich led the way on offense for Seton Hill with a goal while Italia Biondi finished with three shots on goal. Elyza Pilatowski-Herzing added nine saves in the losing effort.
Slippery Rock continues PSAC West play when it travels to Mercyhurst University 7 p.m. Saturday.
GAME NOTES
• The 4-1 victory marks the third straight game that SRU has scored three or more goals. It also marks the first time Slippery Rock has scored three or more goals in three consecutive games since 2015.
• The win marks the first four-game winning streak for The Rock since last years consecutive wins over Mansfield, Clarion, Walsh and Edinboro.
• The Rock have scored 13 goals through its first four games, the most since scoring 19 through the first four games of the 2004 season.
