Rock secure 4-0 win at Pitt-Johnstown

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team defeated Pitt-Johnstown 4-0 on the road Saturday afternoon.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team defeated the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown 4-0 on the road Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 3-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division while Pitt-Johnstown falls to 0-3-0 and 0-2-0 in division play.
 
Slippery Rock was led on offense by Sofia Harrison, Tyler Spence, Shannon McIntyre and Rachel Edge. The quartet scored one goal apiece while Edge added two assists with McIntyre and Megan Sikora adding one apiece.
 
SRU took control on offense in the opening minutes with Harrison netting her second goal of the 2019 campaign just four minutes into the contest on a feed from McIntyre.
 
With the 1-0 lead, The Rock defense went to work, allowing only five shots in the first half.
 
Just before halftime, SRU extended its lead to 2-0 when Tyler Spence scored her first goal of 2019 on a cross from Edge.
 
Slippery Rock came out firing on offense in the second half, recording the first 10 shots, leading to a goal by McIntyre at the 58:18 mark pushing the SRU lead to 3-0.
 
The Rock's lead was never in doubt, allowing only two second-half shots to the Mountain Cats. Edge would seal the deal with her third goal of the season in the 84th minute, securing a 4-0 victory for Slippery Rock.
 
SRU goalkeeper Emma Yoder finished with three saves in 90 clean minutes to earn her second consecutive shutout.
 
Emily Esser led the way for the Pitt-Johnstown offense, recording four shots with two being on goal. Mountain Cat goalkeeper Maria Mosquera added eight saves in the losing effort.
 
Slippery Rock continues PSAC Western Division play when it returns home to host Seton Hill University 1 p.m. Wednesday.
 
GAME NOTES
• Slippery Rock's four goals are the most they have scored since last season against Mansfield.
 
• The shutout of Pitt-Johnstown marks the first time since 2018 matchups with West Chester and Shippensburg that The Rock have recorded back-to-back shutouts.
