CLARION, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play with a 3-0 victory over Clarion on the road Wednesday night.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 2-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the PSAC West to begin the season while Clarion falls to 1-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in division play.
SRU was led on offense by
Sofia Harrison,
Rachel Edge and
Jordyn Minda. The trio scored one goal apiece while Minda,
Kaitlyn Barackman and
Kayla Swope each added an assist.
Slippery Rock hit the ground running offensively recording three shots on goal to open the game, The Rock converted on the second shot when Harrison played a cross from Barackman into the back of the net.
With a 1-0 lead, Slippery Rock continued to pressure the Clarion defense, scoring again in the 10th minute when Edge netted her second goal of the 2019 campaign on a feed from Minda.
Following a near two hour delay due to lightning just after halftime, The Rock came out firing on offense as it recorded three straight shots on goal, two from Swope and one from Edge.
Slippery Rock made sure to convert on its next chance when Minda scoring her second goal of the year on a feed from Swope.
The Rock's lead was never in danger as Clarion would manage just two shots the rest of the game, both being off target.
Rock goalkeeper
Emma Yoder stopped Clarion's only shot on goal to record her fourth career shutout.
Madison Spitko led the way for Clarion on offense recording two shots with one on goal. Golden Eagle goalkeeper Brigid Stermel added 11 saves in the losing effort.
Slippery Rock continues PSAC Western Division play when it travels to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown 2 p.m. Saturday.
GAME NOTES
• Slippery Rock allowed a season-low four shots and one shot on goal in the 3-0 win over Clarion. It's the fewest number of shots allowed in a game by The Rock since last year's season opener against West Virginia Wesleyan College.
• The Rock recorded five corner kicks while only allowing one from Clarion. It is the fifth consecutive game, dating back to 2018, that SRU has either tied or won the corner kick battle over its opponent.
• SRU's 23 shots are the most it has recorded in a game since last year against Millersville.
