INSTITUTE, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost a narrow 4-3 non-conference decision on the road at West Virginia State University on Saturday.
Â
The loss, which snapped The Rock's three-match winning streak, drops SRU's record to 10-5 on the season overall. West Virginia State improved to 8-5 in 2018-19 with the win.
Â
Saturday's match was a back-and-forth contest that featured close individual matches throughout the day.
Â
West Virginia State claimed the team doubles point with back-to-back 6-3 wins in the first and third flights to start the day as Kierstin Hensley and Laura Isbey bested
Viola Lugmayr and
Lois Page followed by a win for Sydney Miller and Hanna Kruhlova over
Lauren Fadden and
Allie Welch.
Â
While it was too late to earn a team point, Slippery Rock did pick up a doubles win in the second flight when
Lacey Cohen and
Olivia Warner defeated Kayla McKnight and Chante' Malo, 6-2.
Â
WVSU proceeded to start the singles portion of Saturday's match with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the first flight by Isbey over Cohen.
Â
However, The Rock battled back to tie the contest at 2-2 thanks to wins by Warner and Page out of the fourth and third flights, respectively. Warner beat McKnight 6-3, 6-1 and Page downed Kruhlova 6-3, 6-2.
Â
The Rock and Yellow Jackets proceeded to trade points as Hensley got the better of Lugmayr in the second flight 6-7, 6-2, 6-0 only for SRU to answer back in the fifth flight thanks to 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 comeback victory by Fadden over Malo to tie the team score 3-3.
Â
Slippery Rock's comeback hopes were dashed in the final match of the day after Tadic narrowly beat Welch 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to secure the Yellow Jackets' win.
Â
SRU will look to bounce back from Saturday's loss with a win 10 a.m. Sunday at the University of Charleston.
