GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team split a doubleheader at Seton Hill University Saturday afternoon at the SHU Softball Complex in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. SRU blanked SHU in game one, 6-0, but fell to the Griffins in game two, 3-1.
The Rock got big contributions from
Adeline Nicholson,
Maggie Moore and
Camie Shumaker in game one. Nicholson and Moore both homered while Shumaker hurled a complete-game shutout.
SRU tried to claw its way back from a 3-0 deficit early in the third inning, but could only push across one run in the fourth inning in game two, falling to Seton Hill, 3-1.
With the split, Slippery Rock is 12-15 overall and 4-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division games while the Griffins are 19-11 and 5-3 in league matchups.
Game One: Slippery Rock 6 – Seton Hill 0
Through the first three innings of game one, both teams could not push across runs. It wasn't until the fourth inning that The Rock struck first and never looked back.
Seton Hill loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, but Shumaker pitched out of trouble. She retired Devyn Terry on the fielder's choice and then got the next batter to close the frame.
After that, both pitchers retired the next six batters they faced, but SRU broke through in the fourth.
Alexa Guglielmino led the inning off reaching on an error.
Kailey Myers later walked, and with two outs, Nicholson came to the plate and blasted her third homer of the season to put The Rock ahead, 3-0.
In the top of the fifth,
Becca Roesch got things started with a double. She then went first to third on a ground out, and was driven in by a
Caitlyn MacKelvey on a sacrifice fly.
SRU continued scoring in the top of the sixth with another longball. With one out and one on, Moore hammered a ball over the wall for a two-run shot to give Slippery Rock a 6-0 advantage. It was her second homer of 2019.
The Griffins mustered just two baserunners in the final two innings as The Rock and Shumaker held on for the win.
Shumaker (W, 8-7) was outstanding tossing the complete-game shutout allowing just three hits and two walks, while punching out four batters.
Terry (L, 9-5) took the loss going 5.1 innings surrendering six runs (three earned) on four hits and one walk, while striking out two.
Game Two: Slippery Rock 1 – Seton Hill 3
Chloe Sharman pitched solid in the circle for SRU in game two, but Seton Hill tallied a few timely hits en route to the win.
The Griffins registered a run in the bottom of the second with some small-ball. Christiana Skrabak led off with a single and was advanced on a ground out. Following a walk, Skrabak stole third to put runners on the corners with one out. Abbie Thrower hit a sac fly to plate Skrabak and give SHU the lead, 1-0.
In the bottom of the third, Seton Hill got a timely hit with a few runners on. With Morgan Toal and Jenna Osikowicz on second and third, Nichole McClendon ripped a two-RBI single to put Seton Hill ahead, 3-0.
SRU tallied one unearned run in the top of the fourth, but was held in check for the rest of the contest and Seton Hill won, 3-1.
Skyla Greco (W, 8-5) got the win hurling the complete game allowing just the one unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out six.
Sharman (L, 4-3) took the loss going 6.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one batter.
