Rock beats Edinboro for third straight win

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches with a 6-1 PSAC West victory against Edinboro on Wednesday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches with a 6-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory against Edinboro University on Wednesday at the SRU Tennis Courts.

The win improves The Rock's record to 10-4 overall and a perfect 2-0 mark in the PSAC West. Edinboro drops to 1-15 overall and 1-1 in league matches with the loss.

Through the very early stages of PSAC West play, Slippery Rock and Indiana University (Pa.) are the only two teams with unblemished conference records.

Edinboro had just five players compete Wednesday, thus guaranteeing The Rock of wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

Needing just one win to secure the team doubles point due to Edinboro forfeiting the third flight match, Slippery Rock rolled to a pair of wins in the first and second flights.

Olivia Warner and Lauren Fadden teamed up to defeat Hannah Brentar and Laura Lopez, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point while Lois Page and Viola Lugmayr closed out the opening portion of Wednesday's match by besting Tatiana Batalla and Jelena Vuenovic, 6-3, in the first flight.

Slippery Rock then cruised to the team victory by winning four straight singles matches before Edinboro was able to avoid a shutout with a win out of the second flight.

Already leading 2-0 after earning the doubles point and getting the aforementioned forfeit win in the sixth flight, Fadden and Allie Welch posted back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in the fourth and fifth spots to clinch the match with respective victories over Paige Morris and Brentar.

Warner then downed Vuenovic from the third flight 6-1, 6-0 followed by a Lugmayr win in the top flight over Lopez 6-1, 6-3.

The Fighting Scots were able to end the match by earning a point at No. 2 singles when Batalla narrowly outlasted Page 3-6, 6-1, 10-8.

Slippery Rock will break from its PSAC West schedule when it heads to West Virginia for a pair of Atlanitc Region contests 12 p.m. Saturday at West Virginia State and 11 a.m. Sunday at the University of Charleston.
