Rock falls twice to No. 18 Mercyhurst

The Slippery Rock baseball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 18 Mercyhurst Monday at Michelle Krill Field.

BUTLER, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team was swept in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader to No. 18 Mercyhurst University Monday at Michelle Krill Field in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The Rock (12-21, 3-15 PSAC West) was no-hit in the opener in an eventual 2-0 loss before dropping game two to Mercyhurst (24-8, 14-6 PSAC West), 11-6.

Slippery Rock was led over the doubleheader by Tyler Merigliano, Joe Campagna and Abraham Mow. Merigliano drove in three runs, Mow hit his fifth home run of the season and Campagna extended his reached base streak to 33 games.

GAME ONE: Mercyhurst 2 – Slippery Rock 0
Slippery Rock could never quite get its offense going as Mercyhurst's Tyler Garbee struck out 12 batters in a no-hit performance to lead the Lakers to a 2-0 victory.

Matt Gibson hit a third-inning solo home run and Zach Mitchell drove in another run in the fourth to supply the Lakers with all of its runs in the opener.

Slippery Rock put runners in base in the third via a Joe Sibeto walk, in the fourth when Jon Kozarian reached on a fielding error and Campagna was hit by a pitch, but could not find a way to push a run across in what turned out to be a Mercyhurst shutout.

While overshadowed by Garbee's big day, Rock starting pitcher Wyatt Daugherty (3-4) was solid in his own right for The Rock on the mound. He scattered two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings. Alex Worthington came on in relief in the sixth and proceeded to strikeout three batters while not allowing any runs over two innings of relief.

Worthington has allowed just four earned runs over 14 innings pitched this season.

GAME TWO: Mercyhurst 11 – Slippery Rock 6
Mercyhurst scored at least one run in six of seven innings during game two on the way to an 11-6 victory.

The Rock's offense rebounded in game two to record eight hits. Merigliano and Ray Scala led the way for SRU with two hits apiece with Merigliano driving in three runs.

Campagna, Mow, Zach Mancz and Cody Cooper were responsible for The Rock's other four hits. Mow's came by way of a home run while Cooper's occurred on a two-run single. Campagna also walked once as well as being hit by a pitch.

Slippery Rock used five pitchers in game two. Tanner Stanz (2-4) got the start, but went just 1.1 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. Ryan Tapp pitched the following 2.2 innings and surrendered only one run to go with four strikeouts.

Chris Anastas made his first appearance since March 8, pitching one inning of relief with one strikeout and one run allowed. Rickey Mineo and Derek Boben tossed the final two innings. Both hurlers allowed one run while Mineo struck out a pair of batters.

The Lakers put the game out of reach early by scoring seven runs early to take a 7-2 lead through three innings. Mercyhurst went on to score one run in each of final four innings. Slippery Rock's best inning of the day came in the bottom of the seventh when Cooper delivered a two-run single and Merigliano added a groundout-RBI.

Slippery Rock will host Bloomsburg University in a non-conference doubleheader at Michelle Krill Field Wednesday. First pitch of game one is set for 5 p.m.
