Game One: Slippery Rock 12 – Indiana (Pa.) 6
IUP jumped on Slippery Rock early, but The Rock would total 13 hits on the day and hang a 12-spot on the Crimson Hawks en route to the game one win.
Shumaker struggled a bit in the first as Indiana struck for five runs on five hits. Following a Kassie Kesneck lead-off double, IUP loaded the bases with one out for Kaitlyn Beers to rip an RBI single up the middle. Brooklyn Kotula followed with a two-RBI double putting IUP ahead, 3-0. Rachel Rodriguez then swatted a double of her own scoring two more.
The Rock answered back right away in the top of the second.
Becca Roesch led off with a walk and was bunted to second. After
Alexa Guglielmino was hit by a pitch,
Caitlyn MacKelvey reached on an error allowing Roesch to score. Myers then stroked a single scoring MacKelvey and Guglielmino cutting into the deficit, 5-3.
SRU later struck for four more runs on four hits in the top of the third. With a runner on, Roesch ripped an RBI double, and later, she would score on a throwing error to tie the game.
Megan Brown would get in on the action with an RBI single to score Guglielmino, and would score later after a throwing error when she tried to steal third. Slippery Rock took the lead, 7-5.
With the score still 7-5 in the top of the fifth, SRU tacked on a few more on a MacKelvey RBI double that scored one. Nicholson added two more with a two-RBI double to score MacKelvey and Guglielmino.
The Crimson Hawks added a run in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough to catch The Rock as they would score two more in the final inning. With a runner on third, Nicholson came through with a sacrifice fly, and later,
Maggie Moore doubled to score Myers. SRU held on for the 12-6 victory.
Despite Shumaker's (W, 11-9) early struggles, she bounced back to get the win allowing six runs on 12 scattered hits and a walk. She also struck out a batter.
Lauren Zola (L, 5-10) took the loss surrendering seven runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk.
